Job summary

FiberLight is seeking a Capacity Planning Engineer to own strategic planning, monitoring, forecasting, and optimization of its national and regional transport, IP/MPLS, Ethernet, and optical infrastructure.

The role ensures sufficient capacity to support customer growth while maximizing asset utilization and minimizing delivery delays. Strong data analysis, dashboard design, and collaboration with Product, Sales Engineering, and Finance are essential.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent industry experience.
  • 8+ years in telecommunications, transport, IP, or strategic network engineering.
  • Strong understanding of MPLS, Layer 2 Ethernet, DWDM and ROADM architectures.
  • Experience with capacity planning methodologies and forecasting.
  • Knowledge of oversubscription models and utilization planning.
  • Ability to analyze large datasets and identify utilization trends.
  • Experience building engineering dashboards and reporting tools.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain long-term capacity strategy for FiberLight's national and regional network.
  • Monitor utilization across IP/MPLS, Ethernet, and optical transport infrastructure.
  • Forecast network growth using historical trends, sales data, and strategic initiatives (30 days to 36 months out).
  • Establish oversubscription policies and utilization thresholds requiring engineering review or augmentation.
  • Design real-time dashboards and automated reporting for backbone, spectrum, port, circuit, and fiber utilization.
  • Develop engineering policies and standards governing capacity planning, augmentation triggers, and equipment lifecycle.
  • Identify backbone, router, switch, optical, and fiber augmentation requirements, and build supporting business cases.
  • Partner with Product Management, Sales Engineering, Construction, Procurement, and Finance on capacity validation and network expansion.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies for network scalability and support M&A/network integration planning.
  • Develop KPIs measuring network health and utilization, and drive continuous improvement in planning methodology.

A well-established fiber and transport network operator is seeking a Capacity Planning Engineer to join its Strategic Engineering team.

About the Role

This role owns the strategic planning, monitoring, forecasting, and optimization of the company's transport, IP/MPLS, Ethernet, and optical infrastructure — ensuring the network has sufficient capacity to support customer growth while maximizing utilization of existing assets and minimizing service delivery delays.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain long-term capacity strategy for FiberLight's national and regional network
  • Monitor utilization across IP/MPLS, Ethernet, and optical transport infrastructure
  • Forecast network growth using historical trends, sales data, and strategic initiatives (30 days to 36 months out)
  • Monitor wavelength utilization, spectrum availability, and route diversity on the optical transport platform
  • Establish oversubscription policies and utilization thresholds requiring engineering review or augmentation
  • Design real-time dashboards and automated reporting for backbone, spectrum, port, circuit, and fiber utilization
  • Develop engineering policies and standards governing capacity planning, augmentation triggers, and equipment lifecycle
  • Identify backbone, router, switch, optical, and fiber augmentation requirements, and build supporting business cases
  • Partner with Product Management, Sales Engineering, Construction, Procurement, and Finance on capacity validation and network expansion
  • Evaluate emerging technologies for network scalability and support M&A/network integration planning

  • Strong understanding of MPLS networking, Layer 2 Ethernet services, DWDM optical transport, ROADM architectures, and carrier Ethernet
  • Experience with network capacity planning methodologies, growth forecasting, and augmentation strategy
  • Strong understanding of oversubscription models and utilization planning
  • Ability to analyze large datasets and identify utilization trends
  • Experience building engineering dashboards and reporting tools
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
Preferred Skills
  • Experience with Fujitsu 1Finity optical transport platforms
  • Experience with Juniper routing and switching platforms
  • Familiarity with NetBrain, Netcracker, GIS, SolarWinds, or similar network management platforms
  • Experience with Python, Power BI, SQL, or other automation/reporting tools
  • Knowledge of hyperscale networking and high-capacity transport architectures
  • CCNP, JNCIP, MEF, or equivalent certifications
