Job summary

Rush University Medical Center in Chicago is seeking a Cancer Registry Specialist to assist with creating and maintaining cancer abstracts from inpatient and outpatient records, death certificates, pathology reports, and autopsy reports. You will participate in medical staff committees, support cancer care plans, and ensure accuracy and compliance with ACoS and ISCR standards.

Qualifications

• RHIA or RHIT certification.
• One year cancer registry abstracting experience.
• Strong knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy and physiology.
• Ability to abstract data accurately from patient records.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Experience with computerized cancer registry database.
• Proficient in Word, Excel and related software.
• Demonstrates attention to detail and accuracy.
• Ability to work with Medical Staff and diverse personalities.
• Ability to apply local, state, and federal guidelines with attention to detail.

Responsibilities

• Accurately captures required data elements from inpatient and outpatient records for cancer registration.
• Performs edit-checks on coded data to ensure data integrity.
• Submits data monthly to Illinois State Cancer Registry and reports to National Cancer Database as required.
• Codes follow-up information and handles correspondence with other registries.
• Assists in preparing cancer statistics reports for medical staff and management.
• Maintains knowledge of cancer trends and participates in relevant committees.
• Supervises data entry for cancer registry projects as needed.
