Job Description Summary

Completes abstracts (case summaries) for submission to the California Cancer Registry and the National Cancer Data Base. Assists in performing Studies of Quality and Annual Report preparation for the Commission on Cancer survey. Performs case-finding and quality control of all reportable neoplasms. Assists in special projects as required.

Job Requirements
  1. EDUCATION REQUIRED: Certified Tumor Registrar, Associate degree in Health/Biology or related field. A Bachelor’s degree in Health/Biology preferred.
  2. EXPERIENCE: Five years experience working in a hospital or centralized cancer registry. Prior experience in the development and completion of computer database reports.
  3. LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATIONS: Certified Tumor Registrar Required at hire.
  4. PREREQUISITE SKILLS:
    1. Knowledge of Federal Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) regulations.
    2. Extensive knowledge of principals of cancer registry operation and tumor nomenclature.
    3. Knowledge of computerized database analysis and applications, including CNExT.
    4. Ability to work tactfully and effectively with patients, hospital staff, and the public.
    5. Demonstrated organizational skills.
    6. Effective verbal, non-verbal, and written communications skills.
    7. Ability to abstract cancer cases without supervision and maintain at least 98% accuracy rate.
    8. Maintain in good standing, CEUs with National Cancer Registrars Association.
    9. In absence of Department Manager, can oversee the day to day operations of the department.
