Job summary

Auburn University Facilities Management is seeking a dedicated Utility Systems Technician to install, operate, and maintain critical campus utilities including water, gas, stormwater, and sewer. You will locate underground utilities, map assets with GPS, document installations, and support emergency response to keep campus operations safe and reliable.

The role emphasizes hands-on field work, preventive maintenance, and adherence to safety protocols.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED plus 2 years in installation, maintenance, and operation of utility systems.
• Valid Driver's License required.
• Associates degree in a technical field with 5 years of relevant experience preferred for Level II.
• Experience using electronic line locate devices and GPS equipment.
• Experience with water and gas metering systems including automatic meter reading and programming systems.

Responsibilities

• Locates underground campus utilities to support other departments and contractors.
• Uses GPS, tablets, and smartphones to document new utilities being installed or repaired.
• Assists with installation and repair of water systems and meter billing processes, including manual meter reading.
• Conducts preventative maintenance on gas and water systems; inspects valves, hydrants, meter boxes, and manholes.
• Responds to emergencies (water/gas leaks, sewer overflows) during and after hours and reports findings to supervisor.
• Maintains required training and certifications; adheres to safety protocols and PPE requirements.
• Assists with repairs to water, gas, sewer lines, and storm drains.
