Job summary

San José Unified is seeking a Campus Supervisor to maintain a safe, structured school environment, monitor student activity, and reinforce expected behavior. You will build relationships with students and coordinate with staff to ensure smooth arrivals, dismissals, and safe campus operations.

The role emphasizes calm decision-making, proactive supervision, and a commitment to student well‑being. This is a full-time, 10-month position at John Muir Middle with a 7:30 am – 4:00 pm schedule,

Responsibilities

  • Monitor student behavior and movement in hallways, cafeterias, playgrounds, and campus areas.
  • Promote respectful behavior and restorative approaches to discipline.
  • Build supportive relationships with students and foster trust and belonging.
  • Respond to safety concerns calmly and notify administrators as needed.
  • Ensure campus access is safe and secure, monitor gates and visitors.
  • Communicate effectively with staff, administrators, and families about student needs.
  • Support arrival, dismissal, and transition times for safe movement of students and traffic flow.
  • Document incidents and maintain accurate records per district procedures.
  • Collaborate with staff to address safety, supervision, and student support needs.
  • Serve as a positive role model, maintaining professionalism and consistency.

You will build positive relationships with students while monitoring campus activities, reinforcing expectations, and promoting respectful behavior. Through your presence, consistency, and care, you will help create a positive school culture that supports student well-being and contributes to a safe and welcoming campus for all. As a Campus Supervisor, you will be assisting with the leading and managing of campus safety operations and be responsible for (but not limited to):
  • Monitoring student behavior and movement in hallways, cafeterias, playgrounds, parking lots, and other campus areas.
  • Promoting and reinforcing positive school culture, including respectful behavior, conflict resolution, and restorative approaches.
  • Building supportive relationships with students, fostering trust, belonging, and open communication.
  • Responding to safety concerns, incidents, or emergencies calmly and appropriately; notifying administrators as needed.
  • Ensuring campus access is safe and secure, monitoring gates, visitors, and general site activity.
  • Communicating effectively with staff, administrators, and families regarding student needs, concerns, or incidents.
  • Supporting arrival, dismissal, and transition times to ensure safe movement of students and traffic flow.
  • Documenting incidents or concerns, maintaining accurate and timely records in accordance with district procedures.
  • Collaborating with school and district staff to address safety, supervision coverage, and student support needs.
  • Serving as a positive role model, maintaining professionalism, fairness, and consistency in all interactions with students and the community.

SB 848 Child Safety & Employment Disclosure Requirement

Effective January 1, 2026, in accordance with California Senate Bill 848 (School Employee Misconduct/Child Abuse Prevention Act), applicants for employment with San José Unified are subject to enhanced child safety, training, and employment disclosure requirements.

Under SB 848, schools are required to strengthen background vetting procedures and obtain employment history information related to allegations of egregious misconduct involving students. Former employers may be contacted to release records regarding substantiated findings of misconduct as permitted by law. Failure to provide complete and accurate information regarding prior educational employment or relevant misconduct findings may result in disqualification from the hiring process or withdrawal of an offer of employment.

SB 848 also expands mandated reporter requirements and requires annual child abuse prevention training for employees and certain volunteers by July 1, 2026. All employees must comply with district-adopted child safety policies, including procedures for supervising and protecting students.
