Campus Security Specialist, Level 1 - Provisional

GENERAL DUTIES

Level I

Under supervision of the College Security Director, incumbents perform campus duties of a specialized nature, including post-audit reviews for program effectiveness. When assigned to physical security, they oversee system design, vendor negotiations, and project management. When focused on staff training, they conduct and oversee in-service programs, coordinate external training, and monitor licenses and certifications.

Responsibilities include:
  • Serving as equipment specialist for CCTV, lighting, access control, fire alarms, and surveillance systems; assisting in system design and vendor interactions.
  • Acting as fire safety specialist: developing safety and evacuation plans, conducting staff training on safety procedures.
  • Serving as locking specialist: assessing security needs, researching locking technologies, directing lock shop activities.
  • Providing expertise in other security and safety areas.
  • Training and developing security staff, evaluating training effectiveness, and liaising with university training programs.

Level II

  • As part of the public safety team, serving as Fire Safety Director: developing fire safety plans, overseeing fire safety staff, conducting drills, and maintaining compliance records.
  • Coordinating university-wide security training, maintaining training records, and ensuring certification compliance.

Minimum Qualifications

Level I

  • High school diploma or equivalent, plus two years as a CUNY Campus Public Safety Sergeant or seven years in security/public safety or related field.
  • Necessary licenses or permits as required.

Substitutions

  • Associate degree substitutes for 2 years of experience; bachelor’s degree substitutes for 4 years.

Applicants must have at least 3 years of progressively responsible experience in physical security or training.

Level II

  • Additional experience in fire safety management or security training oversight required.

Background checks and re-investigations are required. Promotion to Assistant College Security Director is possible for Level II employees.

Compensation

Year 1: $60,454; Year 2: $62,103; Incumbent: $68,310 (salary suppression applies for first 24 months)
