Campus Safety Officer – Night Shift

Location: Wofford College – Spartanburg, South Carolina

Employment Type: Full-Time

Position Summary

Wofford College seeks professional, service‑oriented individuals to join the Campus Safety Department as a Campus Safety Officer on the Night Shift. Officers are armed security professionals licensed through the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and play a critical role in protecting students, faculty, staff, visitors and college property. Responsibilities include maintaining a visible security presence, conducting proactive patrols, securing campus facilities, responding to emergencies, enforcing college policies and applicable laws, and providing exceptional customer service.

Schedule

Shift 1 (Night Shift): 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM, rotating two‑week schedule.

  • Week1: Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday
  • Week2: Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain public safety by protecting students, faculty, staff, visitors, and college property.
  • Conduct proactive patrols by foot, golf cart, bicycle, or patrol vehicle.
  • Respond to calls for service, emergencies, alarms, suspicious activity, accidents, and incidents.
  • Open, close, inspect, and secure campus buildings, facilities, gates, doors, and access points.
  • Monitor surveillance systems and security equipment.
  • Investigate suspicious activity and criminal incidents to prevent crime and apprehend offenders.
  • Enforce applicable federal, state, and local laws, campus regulations, and departmental policies.
  • Exercise arrest authority in accordance with applicable laws and policy.
  • Complete incident reports, daily reports, medical reports, work orders, and other required documentation.
  • Respond to medical emergencies and provide first aid, CPR, AED, Stop the Bleed, and other emergency assistance.
  • Assist with fire alarms, severe weather incidents, disasters, utility emergencies, and other emergency situations.
  • Identify, correct when possible, and report safety and security hazards.
  • Provide safety escorts and transportation assistance.
  • Direct traffic and provide crowd management for athletic events, ceremonies, campus programs, and special events.
  • Assist motorists, visitors, students, faculty, and staff.
  • Escort money transfers and other sensitive assets.
  • Maintain positive public relations while representing the Campus Safety Department and Wofford College.
  • Submit work orders for damaged, malfunctioning, or unsafe equipment and facilities.
  • Maintain accountability and operational readiness of assigned equipment.
  • Follow officer safety procedures and maintain situational awareness at all times.
  • Participate in crime prevention, community engagement, and campus safety initiatives.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors, Sergeants, or the Director of Campus Safety.
Non‑Essential Duties
  • Participate in orientation, field training, in‑service training, and off‑campus professional development programs.
  • Serve as dispatcher relief personnel when required.
  • Assist with administrative projects, community outreach initiatives, special assignments, and departmental programs.
  • Attend professional development training to remain current on public safety, security, emergency management, and higher education best practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • At least 21 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • South Carolina voter registration card (required for SLED licensing).
  • Ability to legally possess and carry a firearm.
  • Pass all required background investigations and screening requirements.
  • Work nights, weekends, holidays, overtime assignments, and special events.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Sound judgment in stressful and rapidly evolving situations.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior military service.
  • Prior law enforcement experience.
  • Prior campus safety, security, corrections, emergency management, fire service, or emergency medical experience.
  • Associate’s degree or higher.
  • Current public safety certifications.
Required Employment Screening
  • Criminal background investigation.
  • Drug screening.
  • Driver’s license and driving record review.
  • Employment verification.
  • NCIC Code Z background investigation (or equivalent).
Required Certifications and Training
  • South Carolina SLED Armed Security Officer License.
  • CPR, AED, First Aid, Stop the Bleed certifications.
  • Taser, OC Spray certifications.
  • Departmental firearms qualification.
  • Body‑Worn Camera Training.
  • Radio Communications Training.
  • Emergency Response Training.
  • Incident Reporting Systems Training.
  • Any additional training required by Wofford College or the Campus Safety Department.
Physical Requirements

The position requires frequent physical activity in indoor and outdoor environments and during all weather conditions. Candidates must be able to walk, stand, patrol, climb stairs, run short distances, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, and lift up to 25pounds, and physically intervene to protect persons or property when necessary.
