Job summary

Meredith College I-O Psychology Master of Arts Program is seeking a campus security officer to respond to calls, patrol the campus, and enforce safety protocols. The role requires flexibility for shift work, weekends, and holidays, with duties including access control and incident response.

Positions are less than 1,000 hours per year and are not eligible for benefits. Prior security experience is a plus, and a valid NC driver license is required for vehicle patrols.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Respond to calls for service from students, staff, faculty, and visitors.
• Determine actions needed to resolve problems; apply minimal force if necessary.
• Patrol campus by vehicle or on foot; control access during closing hours.
• Respond to alarms and suspicious activity; take appropriate action.
• Provide traffic direction for events; enforce parking regulations.
• Assist with car unlocks, jump starts, and basic automotive services.

Provides safety and security services to students, staff, faculty, and visitors through efficient use of departmental resources. Position is classified as essential personnel under college policy and is subject to college and department policies regarding essential personnel. Performs essential duties related to security work as identified by management during inclement weather, emergency situations, or as campus needs dictate.

Position may require shift, weekend, and/or overtime work. Seeking applicants with maximum flexibility and the ability to be available on a call-in status. There are no guarantees on the number of hours per week. The position will fill in for vacation periods as well as work during holidays throughout the year. This position is less than 1,000 hours per year and is not eligible for benefits.

First Shift hours: 7am - 3pm; Second Shift hours: 3pm - 11pm; Third Shift hours: 11pm - 7am.

Duties

• Responds to all calls for service and request for assistance from Meredith College student, staff, faculty and visitors.
• Determines necessary and appropriate actions needed to resolve problems and answers calls for service. May need to resort to applying minimum levels of force at times.
• Patrols campus by vehicle or foot. Controls access to campus and the Greenway during closing hours.
• Responds to any call, fire or intrusion alarms, including suspicious person(s) and take appropriate action.
• Provides traffic direction for large and small events.
• Enforces parking regulations, including towing and auto-booting as appropriate. Provides car unlock, jump start, and other automotive services to students, faculty, and staff. (Flat tires can be changed if the conditions are safe).
• Checks doors and window of building to ensure they are secure. Turns on and turn off interior and exterior light according to set schedules or special request.
• Duties may include inclement weather safety responsibilities as necessary due to inclement weather and activities related to emergency situations.
• May be required to work during campus closures.
• Assist in turning on and off campus lighting for Special Events and scheduled sports activities.

Skills Needed

• Ability to use discretion in handling difficult persons and analyze situations likely to be encountered on patrol.
• Observe and retain names, faces and details of occurrences; keep detailed notes for report writing and other daily log sheets, understand and correct emergency alarm systems.
• Observe legal and defensive driving practices; interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
• Ability to understand and work within the scope of authority; apply policies and procedures.

• May need to confront hostile or belligerent persons in an appropriate and professional manner.

Education & Experience

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Current NC Driver License and clear driving history.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

• Must be able to work any shift and respond/report for duty, as necessary. Part of duties may include general office setting with moderate noise level. Must be able to operate company vehicles.
• Patrols campus outdoors and may be exposed to the weather. May be held for additional shifts during inclement weather, if relief is not possible.
• Ability to navigate physical obstacles, such as walls, heights, etc. Ability to physically help students, faculty, and staff having health issues.
• Must be able to walk for extended distances, stand for long periods, climb stairs, and run, as necessary.
• Must occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
