Summary of Position
The primary responsibility of the Campus Safety Officer (CSO) is to protect the members of the Converse community, along with the property and assets of the university. Under the general supervision of a Shift Sergeant, the officer will engage in proactive and responsive measures to ensure safety and security in a courteous, helpful, unbiased, and professional manner.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Protective Services
- Routinely patrol campus and other properties on foot, motor vehicles, or authorized bikes. Watch for unauthorized persons, suspicious or criminal activities, disturbances, and violations through patrols and camera monitoring.
- Secure campus facilities by locking and unlocking as directed. Conduct safety checks and patrol all buildings and grounds.
- Report safety hazards to appropriate personnel.
- Monitor weather conditions and report dangerous or unusual weather-related activity.
- Respond to emergencies and disasters on campus.
Enforcement Services
- Enforce department and university policies, regulations, and applicable laws.
- Manage traffic and parking regulations, assist with traffic control, and set up signage and barricades.
- Conduct arrests, issue trespasses, investigate complaints, and prepare incident reports.
- Testify in court as needed.
Community Services
- Render first aid and life support when necessary.
- Implement community safety programs.
- Interact positively with the campus community, providing assistance and safety guidance.
Other Services
- Complete required training and recertification programs.
- Wear uniforms and handle assigned equipment responsibly.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
- Must be 21 years old by hire date.
- Valid South Carolina driver’s license and ability to operate safety vehicles.
- Criminal background check required.
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- Minimum one year of security or related experience.
- Complete required certifications (SLED courses, ASP Baton, NARCAN, Pepper Spray, First Aid, CPR, Firearms, etc.) within specified timeframes.
Physical and Skills Requirements
- Ability to walk and stand for long periods, climb, kneel, reach, and lift up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to intervene physically and work outdoors.
- Effective communication, professionalism, attention to detail, and ability to work independently or in a team.
