Job summary

Colorado College is seeking a Campus Safety Officer to support patrols, emergency response, and campus security operations on the Main Campus. This role works in a 24/7 operation and may include weekends, holidays, overnight shifts, and incident response to maintain a safe learning environment.

The officer coordinates communications, monitors security systems, and collaborates with students, faculty, staff, and visitors. A valid driver’s license and strong customer service skills are essential.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • 3 years of experience in a related field preferred.
  • Associate degree or related certifications (NIMS ICS) preferred.

Job Summary

Join Colorado College as a Campus Safety Officer and help foster a safe, welcoming, and secure campus community. In this highly visible role, you will support campus safety through patrol, emergency response, community engagement, and daily communication operations. Working closely with students, faculty, staff, and visitors, you will promote awareness of campus resources and College policies while helping protect the people, property, and reputation of Colorado College. As part of a 24/7 operation, Campus Safety Officers may be assigned to weekends, holidays, overnight shifts, and critical incident response, playing an essential role in maintaining a safe learning and living environment for all.

Responsibilities
  • Communication Operations:
    • Act as the primary contact for communications via phone, email, radio, and in person, using customer service skills to gather, prioritize, and relay information.
    • Maintain knowledge of department protocols and ensure accurate documentation of calls and follow-ups.
    • Monitor security systems (CCTV, alarms, emergency communications), generate service calls, and dispatch appropriate services.
    • Serve as a liaison for campus support resources and manage office equipment such as keys and radios.
  • Patrol and Community Service:
    • Patrol campus areas to prevent theft, vandalism, and trespass, and investigate suspicious activities.
    • Ensure building security, monitor for hazards, and enforce parking and traffic regulations.
    • Engage with students, staff, and guests, fostering rapport within the college community. Complete logs, reports, and provide safe transportation around campus
  • Emergency Response:
    • Respond to fire alarms, accidents, and minor injuries, assisting emergency personnel and deciding appropriate courses of action.
    • Serve as the initial contact during emergencies, use de-escalation techniques, and manage incident reports.
    • Provide security services for special events and maintain knowledge of the college's Emergency Management Plan to effectively handle critical incidents.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 3 years of experience in a related field

Must be 21 and possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a driving record that is insurable by Colorado College's motor vehicle insurance carrier; excellent oral and written communication skills; excellent customer service skills; ability to exercise good judgment and handle confidential/sensitive information with discretion; ability to think critically and problem solve; ability to engage and develop working relationships with people from different cultural backgrounds; proficient with Microsoft Office Suite; ability to operate computer equipment and a 2-way radio.

Physical requirements include ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions; walking, prolonged standing, climbing of stairs; ability to lift/carry up to 20 lbs.

One year of relevant work experience may be substituted for one year of required education (OR) one year of relevant academic coursework beyond the minimum equirement may be substituted for one year of required professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate degree or certifications in a related field to include NIMS IC<S certification; experience in higher education setting, campus safety, security, hospitality services, and/or emergency responses services.

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range
  • $19.48 to $22.89 per hour
  • This role is eligible for shift differential pay when assigned to and working approved shifts that qualify under Colorado College's shift differential guidelines.
