Position Overview

The police officer position is responsible for protecting life and property, ensuring security and safety on Waubonsee Community College campuses. This is in accordance with the authority granted to sworn police officers under the Illinois Public Community College Act, college policies, department orders, and professional ethics. The position reports to the Campus Police Sergeant. Candidates must demonstrate a 'spirit of service,' work collaboratively to raise public awareness, support problem-solving, and engage in proactive policing to foster a respectful campus culture.

Responsibilities
  1. Patrol campus areas to prevent crimes and mitigate risks, including securing buildings and checking for safety violations.
  2. Maintain professionalism and courtesy while interacting with students, staff, the public, and law enforcement.
  3. Respond to medical emergencies, provide First Responder level first aid, and call for advanced care if needed.
  4. Monitor weather, surveillance, and alarm systems; investigate suspicious conditions; assist with emergency notifications and evacuations.
  5. Investigate complaints, interview witnesses, and take actions such as warnings, enforcement, or arrests.
  6. Perform traffic control, issue citations, investigate accidents, and assist with parking and directions.
  7. Secure crime scenes, gather evidence, conduct investigations, and apprehend suspects.
  8. Collaborate with college community on safety issues and address campus concerns.
  9. Provide courtesy services like vehicle unlocking, escorting pedestrians, and offering college information.
  10. Supervise and train cadets on shifts.
  11. Report safety hazards, maintain certifications, and participate in community safety seminars.
  12. Complete reports and assist with mandated documentation.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent; associate degree preferred.
  • Three years of policing experience with a recognized agency or campus law enforcement.
  • Must be 21 or older.
  • Ability to pass psychological and medical fitness exams, maintain ongoing fitness evaluations.
  • Certification in First Responder First Aid/CPR/AED.
  • Current Illinois police officer certification or ability to obtain within three months.
  • Valid Illinois driver’s license with acceptable record.
  • Background check clearance.
  • Ability to interpret safety documents and use Microsoft Office and police software.
  • Effective communication skills; bilingual in Spanish is a plus.
  • Availability to work weekends, nights, and on-call hours.
