Job description

Campus Police Officer II (2 Openings) | Holyoke Community College is situated on a 135-acre campus equipped with advanced technology and serves over 9,000 students annually. The college emphasizes innovation, student concern, and success, fostering a tradition of excellence for over six decades.

Department of Community Safety: This department promotes safety, education, protection, and support for both the college and the surrounding community. Our sworn officers, certified by the Massachusetts Police Training Committee (MPTC) and the Bridge Academy Training Program, enforce laws while fostering respect, civility, and well-being. We adopt a community policing approach focused on building relationships, mutual respect, and collaboration to prevent crime and build community trust.

Purpose: The Campus Police Officer plays a vital role in upholding laws and supporting the college's mission. Responsibilities include participating in campus and community initiatives, undertaking specialized assignments, and fostering collaborative relationships based on community policing principles to reduce misconduct, enhance safety, and improve community well-being.

Summary: Candidates should be knowledgeable about relevant laws, able to communicate effectively, physically fit, and capable of handling emergencies calmly. Collaboration and professionalism are essential.

  • Ensure campus security; investigate complaints and suspicious activities; manage crowds.
  • Protect persons, facilities, and property.
  • Patrol campus buildings and grounds via foot, bike, or vehicle.
  • Enforce policies, laws, and regulations.
  • Exercise police powers, including arrests and searches, and advise suspects of their rights.
  • Investigate crimes, interview witnesses, mediate disputes, and preserve crime scenes.
  • Manage campus traffic and safety regulations, direct traffic, assist disabled drivers, and write tickets.
  • Operate various equipment including radios, emergency gear, and firearms.
  • Perform duties such as reporting, record-keeping, assisting in emergencies, and coordinating with other agencies.
  • Provide emergency medical aid and support court proceedings.
  • Work during adverse weather and emergencies.
  • Participate in community engagement and uphold the Commonwealth’s Equity Agenda.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional/Specialized Duties: Includes roles such as Sexual Assault Investigator, Armorer, Weapon's Instructor, Evidence Officer, and others.

REQUIRED:

  • Must meet Chapter 253 of the Acts of 2020 (Police Reform Bill): be at least 21, have two years of law enforcement experience or equivalent, complete MPTC-approved training, pass physical and psychological evaluations, background check, and POST exam. Must hold or obtain first aid and CPR certificates.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Class A firearm license.
  • Valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
  • Knowledge of police procedures, laws, and criminal procedures.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to prepare reports.
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Physical stamina and endurance.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships, handle stressful situations, exercise discretion, and follow instructions.

PREFERRED:

  • Experience with police dispatch software, report writing, or CJIS technology.
  • Additional language skills.

EQUIVALENCY: Candidates can explain how their background prepares them if they do not meet all qualifications.

Position Details: Full-Time, AFSCME unit, biweekly salary $2,476.22, Grade 17, Step 4. Funding: State. Hours: 40/week.
