Salem State University’s Campus Police Department seeks a dedicated Campus Police Officer II to protect our campus community through patrols, investigations, and emergency response. Job description

Overview

As a Campus Police Officer II at Salem State University, you'll serve as a comprehensive public safety professional protecting our campus community through patrol duties on foot and by vehicle, ensuring compliance with Massachusetts state laws and university regulations. Your role encompasses community-oriented policing, crime prevention education, preliminary investigations, traffic enforcement, and emergency response including first aid and medical transport. You'll exercise full police powers including making arrests, testifying in court, and collaborating with external agencies while building meaningful partnerships with students, faculty, and staff. The position offers specialized training opportunities in areas such as bicycle patrol, defensive tactics, firearms instruction, and crime prevention programming. Administrative responsibilities include supervising junior officers, conducting training, maintaining records, and operating modern law enforcement technology.

Minimum Entrance Requirements

Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in a governmental police force or in law enforcement work, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

1. An associate degree with a major in police science, law enforcement or criminal justice may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.*
2. A bachelor's degree or higher, with a major in police science, law enforcement, or criminal justice, may be substituted for the required experience.*

*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

Special Requirements

1. Must be at least 21 years old.
2. Must possess US Citizenship.
3. Must possess a valid driver's license.
4. Possess or be able to obtain Massachusetts Class 'A' Firearms Permit.
5. No person who has been convicted of a felony or of an offense involving Chapter 94C or 209A of the Massachusetts General Laws, or similar violations in other areas, will be considered for police employment.
6. Must pass a background investigation, medical examination, psychological screening, andMunicipal Police Training Committee fitness standards.
7. Possess or be able to obtain certification issued by the Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission (POST-C), meeting the statutory requirements set forth in Chapter 253 of the Acts of 2020 chapter 6E authorizing employment to work as police officer in the Commonwealth.
8. Successful completion of a twelve (12) month probationary period.
9. Ability to pass a drug and/or alcohol test

Preferred Qualifications

1. Applicants who are MPTC-academy trained and POST-C certified strongly preferred.
2. Must have the ability to maintain composure and perform under stressful conditions and to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Working Location

This is an onsitepositionin Salem, MA with on-campus, in-person responsibilities,which may require evening, weekend, and holiday hours.

Employment is contingent upon a completed background and CORI check satisfactory to the university.
