Gardner-Webb University invites applicants for a Campus Police Officer position. This role is within the University Police Department, part of the Division of Student Development. The Campus Police Officer will perform law enforcement duties to ensure the safety of life and property on campus. This full-time, 12-month position offers the opportunity to serve and protect our students, staff, and visitors.

General Conditions of Work

The employee independently performs law enforcement duties including community policing, traffic management, investigations, and patrols. Responsibilities include crime prevention, investigation, victim assistance, traffic control, suspect apprehension, court testimony, and related tasks. Work requires exercising judgment, initiative, and composure, often under stressful and hazardous conditions, both indoors and outdoors, following campus policies and legal standards. The employee reports to the Police Chief and Assistant Chief, with performance evaluated through reports and supervision.

Essential Functions & Tasks
  • Patrols campus streets on foot or by vehicle.
  • Builds rapport with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
  • Checks premises, monitors for suspicious activity, reports hazards.
  • Responds to emergencies, complaints, and disturbances, taking appropriate action.
  • Investigates accidents and crimes, gathers evidence, makes arrests.
  • Transports suspects, serves legal papers, and manages traffic at events or incidents.
  • Operates communication equipment, maintains vehicle and gear.
  • Prepares activity reports and follows safety protocols.
  • Assists stranded motorists and provides visitor information.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of laws, ordinances, and campus policies regarding arrest and traffic.
  • Understanding of law enforcement practices and community policing.
  • Skill in using police equipment and self-defense tactics.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, communicate effectively, and build public relations.
Physical Requirements

Must perform physical activities including lifting up to 100 pounds, and operate law enforcement equipment. Visual acuity required for reading and operating equipment.

Qualifications

Completion of a two-year degree in Criminal Justice or equivalent education plus experience, or five years of relevant experience. Must hold a valid North Carolina driver’s license and law enforcement certification. Availability for varied shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
