Davidson campus police are sworn law enforcement officers with powers equivalent to North Carolina municipal and county police officers under state statute 74-G. They collaborate closely with local police departments and participate in community outreach and crime prevention initiatives.

The department employs a community-oriented policing approach, fostering police-community partnerships and proactive problem-solving strategies. Officers are integral to the community, aiming to build trust and promote a safe, healthy campus environment that encourages responsibility and acceptance.

The police officer's duties include protecting life and property, enforcing laws and ordinances, maintaining order, and investigating crimes. Depending on training and departmental needs, officers may perform specialized duties. They apply community policing principles impartially in all safety services within the college setting.

Essential functions include arresting suspects, maintaining order, preparing reports, and exercising judgment in search, seizure, and arrest situations. Officers respond to calls, complaints, and reports of criminal activity, and must communicate effectively, provide immediate assistance in emergencies, maintain control in confrontational situations, administer medical aid if trained, and transport detainees.

Applicants must possess NC BLET certification or obtain it within a year of hiring. Those requiring BLET sponsorship must sign a training repayment agreement before hiring. The position is full-time, involving 12-hour rotating shifts, with some evening, holiday, and weekend work, including overtime for events like athletic games, move-ins, and commencements.
