Job summary

San José State University is seeking a Police Lieutenant to provide leadership and management within the University Police Department. The Lieutenant will assume command in the Captain’s absence and oversee division responsibilities including Patrol, Administrative, and Investigations as assigned by the Chief.

The role requires extensive experience in law enforcement, supervisory leadership, and a commitment to campus safety, with collaboration across campus stakeholders and public safety

Qualifications

• High School Diploma/GED or higher required.
• POST Advanced Certificate and Supervisory Certificate required.
• 10 years sworn police officer experience in CA with progression responsibilities.
• 5 years sworn supervisory experience as Sergeant or higher.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership and management to patrol, administrative, or investigations divisions.
• Attend meetings, teach training classes, deliver lectures, prepare reports, maintain personnel records.
• Maintain contact with local, state, and federal law enforcement and public safety agencies.
• Identify best practices to improve departmental goals and safety.
• Promote community-oriented policing aligned with the university's mission.
