Job summary

Colgate University is seeking an on-site Custodian for the Hamilton, NY campus. The role involves daily interaction with students, staff, and visitors, performing cleaning duties, maintaining floors, and ensuring safety standards are met.

The position requires ability to work evenings weekends, follow safety procedures, and operate cleaning equipment. A high school diploma is preferred, and a valid driver’s license may be needed for certain tasks.

Qualifications

• Must be available for work beyond normal schedule and reachable by phone for emergencies.
• Must be able to work independently as well as part of a team.
• Must possess effective communication skills, in both verbal and written formats.
• Must have customer service skills.
• Must interact with students daily in a positive, professional and friendly manner.
• Must have basic computer skills and the ability to use/learn Gmail, Word, Excel, FAMIS work order/time card system.
• Must wear PPE as required.
• Must work with diverse groups of students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

Responsibilities

• Conduces detail-oriented cleaning tasks such as dusting surfaces, walls, and polishing fixtures and furniture.
• Maintains floor care through vacuuming, shampooing carpets, and waxing.
• Clean and disinfect restrooms, locker rooms, and shared spaces.
• Remove garbage and recycling from assigned areas and support exterior waste removal.
• Follow all safety protocols and wear PPE; complete required safety training.
• Report maintenance and safety concerns to Facilities.
• Assist with moves, deliveries, and event setups; cover athletics events as needed.
• Maintain orderly custodial areas and manage cleaning supplies inventory.
