Job summary

Caltech is seeking a custodian to maintain campus buildings and student housing areas. Under supervision, you will follow safety standards and cleaning procedures, performing floor care, vacuuming, disinfecting restrooms, and maintaining high-traffic areas.

Responsibilities include cleaning walls and glass surfaces, removing trash, and supporting other trades. The schedule is 5:00 AM–1:30 PM, Monday–Friday, with potential overtime.

Qualifications

• Ability to communicate and follow verbal and written instructions.
• Six months or more experience working as a custodian in educational or commercial settings.
• Familiarity with custodial hand tools and floor care equipment.

Responsibilities

• Perform floor care including sweeping and wet mopping on various surfaces.
• Vacuum carpets and upholstery; spot-clean as needed.
• Clean and sanitize restrooms, showers, and kitchens regularly.
• Disinfect high-traffic areas and frequently touched surfaces.
• Washes walls, windows, glass surfaces, and elevators; dusts surfaces.
• Remove trash and recyclables; maintain building entrances.
• Move furniture and climb ladders as part of daily tasks; handle keys per schedule.

Job Summary

Under direct supervision, applies knowledge of cleaning techniques and performs a variety of custodial duties required to maintain campus buildings and student housing areas keeping them clean, orderly and safe by using hand tools or equipment. Performs work in accordance with Institute safety standards and regulatory agencies (e.g., OSHA and CDC guidelines).

In coordination and cooperation with other trades, performs various cleaning support duties that include but are not limited to the following:

• Performs floor care, including stairwells, by sweeping and wet mopping different types of floor surfaces using hand tools or equipment.
• Performs carpet care and cleans soft porous surfaces by vacuuming and spot-cleaning carpets and upholstered furniture using tools or equipment.
• Cleans and disinfects restrooms, showers, and kitchens on a high-frequency schedule.
• Cleans and sanitizes high-traffic areas and regularly touched sources on a high-frequency schedule.
• Washes and cleans walls, blackboards, windows, light covers, glass surfaces, and elevators.
• Dusts horizontal and vertical surfaces, which may require working at heights.
• Removes trash by hand or cart and moves trash to designated trash disposal areas.
• Removes recyclables from building interior and breaks down cardboard boxes.
• Maintains building entrances and immediate area surrounding building of assignment.
• Climbs ladders, moves/arranges furniture, and lifts/carries items in the course of daily assignments.
• Responsible for the custody of keys in assigned work area; unlocks entry building doors as directed on security building schedule.
• Must be able to work overtime, including weekends when required.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

• Ability to communicate and follow verbal and written instructions.
• At least six months of experience working as a custodian in a fast-paced educational or commercial environment.
• Must be familiar with custodial hand tools, floor care equipment, and cleaning techniques.
• Must be able to work this assigned work schedule: 5:00AM – 1:30PM, Monday – Friday.

Physical Requirements

• Must be able to lift/carry a minimum of 50 lbs. on a regular basis.
• Ability to walk, push, pull, climb, twist, stoop, and bend to accomplish job requirements on a consistent/regular basis.

Hiring Range

$19.50 - $24.75 Per Hour
