Job summary

University of Alabama at Birmingham is seeking a Central Plant Operator to oversee operation, maintenance, and monitoring of chilled water systems across campus facilities. The role supports critical infrastructure by ensuring reliable delivery of chilled water to buildings and hospitals.

You will inspect equipment, perform diagnostics and collaborate with contractors to maintain performance and regulatory compliance while contributing to safe, efficient plant operations.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years of HVAC experience.
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Graduation from an accredited HVAC vocational program is encouraged.
• EPA 608 certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Operate and monitor chillers, pumps, cooling towers and related systems with computerized monitoring to ensure reliable plant performance.
• Provide 24/7/365 alarm monitoring, support operations, and respond to abnormal conditions.
• Inspect equipment and record data (temperatures, pressures, flow, chemicals, refrigerants, oil) for performance documentation.
• Maintain and calibrate control systems, sensors, relays, and panels using diagnostic tools.
