Qualifications

THE SALVATION ARMY JOB DESCRIPTION – Camp Lifeguard

Job Summary

Serves as a lifeguard for all camp waterfront operations; provides constant surveillance of waterfront activities; maintains the cleanliness of the pool and lake area; monitors and controls the chemical levels of pool water ensuring proper levels are maintained at all times; prepares pool records in an accurate and complete manner; plans swimming activities at the camp's pool and waterfront.

Essential Functions

  1. Provides emergency lifesaving assistance to swimmers; performs lifesaving C.P.R. and first aid in accordance with certified practices and procedures; contacts emergency medical assistance when needed; stays with victims until emergency medical assistance takes over care of the victim.
  2. Performs all duties in accordance with prescribed regulatory compliance guidelines as well as American Camp Association accreditation standards.
  3. Assists in maintaining swimming pool and lakefront programs.
  4. Ensures the camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures in boating by assisting in the implementations of staff training for boating, trains other staff in their boating responsibilities, and ensures campers and staff follow safety procedures for boating.
  5. Provides constant surveillance of pool and waterfront activities to help prevent and manage injuries.
  6. Directs and supervises the behavior of all swimmers to ensure compliance with pool safety rules.
  7. Evaluates aquatics abilities of campers and staff.
  8. Teaches swim classes as assigned.
  9. Monitors opening day swim try-outs, free swim, water carnivals, and night swims.
  10. Maintains changes in weather and responds appropriately and in cooperation with established camp guidelines for waterfront evacuation; guides campers in a calm and orderly manner.
  11. Assists with the movement of swimmers and conducts rainy day activities with campers.
  12. No personal swimming when campers' swim period is in session.
  13. Maintains the cleanliness of the pool water; vacuums the bottom of the pool surface; scrubs side walls; back washes the filter system; checks filter gauges and regulates water level and temperature of the pool.
  14. Cleans restrooms, deck, baby pool, and grounds.
  15. Monitors and controls the chemical levels of pool water ensuring proper levels are maintained at all times.
  16. Provides pool records in an accurate and complete manner.
  17. Maintains neatness and cleanliness of the waterfront area; collects and disposes of trash.
  18. Daily inspection and cleaning of paddle boats, pontoon boat, dock areas, and life jackets.
  19. Makes sure that all boating equipment is secured and locked before personnel leave the lake area.
  20. Monitors waterfront activities to include swimming, boating, canoeing, etc.
  21. Participates enthusiastically as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.
  22. Sits with camper tables during meals and serves as a table monitor when needed.
  23. Keeps personal living quarters neat, clean, and ready for inspection.
  24. Be available to participate and assist with camp programs and activities as directed by the Camp Director.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Knowledge of life-saving techniques.
  2. Knowledge of the principles and practices of child and youth behavior and development.
  3. Knowledge of proper pool management.
  4. Knowledge and prior use of a power boat as used for water rescue.
  5. Ability to supervise swimmers and provide constant surveillance of pool activities in order to ensure swimmer safety and to respond to emergency rescue when needed.
  6. Ability to perform life-saving techniques, C.P.R. and first aid procedures in emergency situations.
  7. Ability to enforce all pool rules.
  8. Ability to build and maintain effective mentor relationships with children and youth.
  9. Ability to communicate effectively with campers and camp staff.
  10. Ability to test and adjust pool water to ensure the proper chemical balance as well as the safety of the swimmers.
  11. Ability to prepare and maintain up-to-date pool records.
  12. Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies.
  13. Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
  14. Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
  15. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
  16. Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid; must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
  17. Ability to meet attendance requirements.
  18. Ability to read, write, and communicate in the English language.
  19. Ability to swim and perform life-saving activities.

Education and Experience

One year experience working as a lifeguard preferred, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Certifications

  • Certification as a Lifeguard by a nationally recognized certifying body;
  • Life Saving Certification
  • C.P.R. and First Aid Certification

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

Some physical requirements of the Camp Lifeguard – Aquatics/Lakefront position could be endurance including climbing, standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate lifeguard equipment and activities are required. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Have a willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering a program in the facility available. Operate with daily exposure to the sun and heat and varying environmental conditions.

Additional Information

Camp Staff Orientation will be held 6/10/2025 – 6/15/2025 and participation is required.

The 2025 Summer Camp program will be held 6/16/2025-7/19/2025. If you are unable to work the entire program session, please let us know on your application.
