Job description

Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas (GSSWT) is headquartered in San Antonio, TX and serves more than 14,000 Girl Scouts (girls and adults) across twenty-one counties in southwest Texas. Girl Scouts is the world’s preeminent leadership development organization for girls, building girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. Girl Scouts take the lead in bettering their communities and the world. The Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) empowers girls to discover their own world as they develop a strong sense of self and strengthen values, connect with others in a global community, promote cooperation and embrace diversity, and take action in the world as girls identify and solve problems they care about.

We are currently looking for individuals to fill the following Summer Camp position at Camp La Jita. Camp La Jita rests on 236 acres of Texas Hill Country land, one hour and twenty minutes west of San Antonio.

Position Title: Unit Leader 1

Essential Job Functions:

  • Know each girl in the unit and share the interests of each.
  • Supervise bedtime and wakeup routines.
  • Ensure that girls arrive to program prepared with appropriate clothing, materials, and levels of hygiene.
  • Engage in conflict resolution between campers, as necessary.
  • Be aware of the health and physical well-being of the campers and report any concerns to the Residential Camp Nurse.
  • Ensure that campers receive their daily medications, if necessary.
  • Work with Unit Leader 2’s to help girls plan and implement activities for the unit.
  • Assist and direct campers in daily camp chores (called Kapers).
  • Communicate with camper guardians on drop-off/pickup days.
  • Assist in drop off / pick up day procedures.
  • Report any needed repairs or supplies to Camp Director, Assistant Camp Director or Administrative Assistant.
  • Report any behavioral concerns to Assistant Camp Director or Camp Director.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings.
  • Participate in all camp activities.
  • Hold campers and other staff members to principles of the Girl Scout Law.
  • Act as a host/hostess for camp visitors and parents.
  • Follow and adhere to National and Council policies, procedures, and plans.
  • Operate according to ACCT standards and local operational procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must enjoy working with youths on a one-on-one basis.
  • Valid driver’s license and successful completion of a background check.
  • Reliable transportation to and from camp site.
  • Ability to reside at the camp property for the duration of the camp season.
  • Must be able to attend camp training sessions from May 27 - 30 and June 2 - 6, 2025.
  • Must be able to work the entire camp session from June 8th - July 25th, 2025.
  • This position performs its duties indoors and in outdoor weather conditions.
  • Willingness to work as a team member.
  • Prior residential camp experience a plus.
  • Be flexible, energetic, and have a good sense of humor.
  • Must be able to walk long distances.
  • Girl Scouts experience is a plus.

Physical Demands:

  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include heavy visual acuity.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or listen.
  • The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, and reach with hands or arms.
  • The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

Work Environment:

  • Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering camp programs.
  • Work daily with exposure to the sun and heat.

General Information:

  • GSSWT provides applicable trainings and certifications for hired staff.
  • All meals and housing arrangements are covered by GSSWT for Overnight Camp positions.
  • Location: Utopia, TX 78884
  • Compensation: $560 per week
  • All staff are considered role models to all campers at GSSWT overnight camps.
  • If selected for hire, a minimum of 3 references will be requested.
