Do you think a job at YMCA Camp Kern is just for seasonal employees during the summer? It is for most departments, but not in the kitchen! Known as being the BEST camp in the Nation, The YMCA Camp Kern is open year-round and offers up to three meals a day to summer campers, school groups, corporate groups, sport teams, weddings and more. Just like the various reasons for visiting camp, our guests are of various ages and all come to camp with high expectations of eating well. Our goal as kitchen staff is to go beyond those expectations by offering various options to choose from that will fuel them for the activities they will be participating in during their stay.
Position Summary:
Works closely with the Kitchen Operational Director and the Kitchen Coordinator to develop a menu that can be transported to buildings onsite and served buffet style. Collaborates with other kitchen staff to ensure a well-planned meal service is served with the highest quality of food, clean and sanitized buffet tables, place settings and service utensils.

Essential Functions:
  • Functions as the person in charge in the absence of Director and/or Kitchen Coordinator.
  • Assist in the entire health and safety of food service operation.
  • Assist in food preparation, service, and clean up.
  • Prepare meals to be catered to various buildings located on Camp Kern.
  • Assures that all prepared foods arrive at the service site at the correct holding temperatures and stored properly until time of service.
  • Implement menus, which are developed with each type of group and budget in mind.
  • Monitors supplies and notifies supervisor when supplies are low.
  • Helps unload and store supplies in designated spots, checking for damage or unusable stock.
  • Provides outstanding food quality and service to our guests.
  • Stays calm under pressure and communicates needs to others.
  • Set up buffet tables making sure foods are prepared to temperature and service utensils are provided.
  • Facilitates a smooth-running meal service, anticipating when lines need to be refilled and spot cleaning throughout meal.
  • Follows all safety and risk management procedures and reports safety issues to the Director.
  • Comfortable around large groups of children of various ages.
  • Availability to work long shifts, early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
  • Offer substitutions to those guests who have dietary needs that mirror menu items that are being served.
  • Follow closing procedures, typically out by 8 pm, to ensure morning staff have a smooth opening.
  • Flexibility to work outside of the kitchen with other departments during slow months to maintain full-time hours and benefits. Various duties could include cleaning equipment, cleaning and painting cabins, and/or helping in the barn.
  • Prepares, serves, and cleans up after a meal service.
  • Manages staff members that have been assigned to them.
  • Follows guidelines set by the Health Department.
  • Places food orders.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED preferred but not required.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older. Valid driver’s license required.
    • A valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and completion of YMCA Driver Orientation are required only for employees who will perform driving responsibilities as part of their role. Candidates without a valid license may still be hired but will not be eligible to drive YMCA vehicles until requirements are met.
  • Must possess the desire to work in a camp kitchen.
  • Holds a Level One or higher certification in food service or is able to obtain one within 30 days of employment.
