Job description

Job Title: Camp Counselor

The Camp Counselor is responsible for assisting participants with medication administration, personal cares, providing quality recreation-based services, and maintaining a safe, supportive, and comfortable setting.

Camp date: 6/16/2025 - 8/1/2025 (You must commit to working the entirety of your assigned camp)

Working Hours: 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Locations: Wil-O-Way Underwood, 10602 Underwood Parkway, Wauwatosa, WI OR Wil-O-Way Grant, 207 S. Lake Drive, South Milwaukee, WI

ESSENTIAL DUTIES (FUNCTIONS):
  • Interact with participants in a respectful, age-appropriate, and culturally appropriate manner, honoring participant preferences and requests, in conjunction with behavior plans and care information.
  • Ensure participants are provided with proper medication administration based on physician's directive.
  • Work cooperatively with the programming team to provide cares to participants with ADLs (toileting, bathing, ambulating, transfers, feeding, changing clothes, etc.).
  • Report all possible cases of illness to Camp Site Lead and aid participants that become ill.
  • Clean up spills/bodily fluids using appropriate infection control procedures.
  • Ensure the safety of each participant by monitoring activities, maintaining a sanitary, clutter-free environment, overseeing pool setup, monitoring and maintenance (as applicable), and participating in safety training and emergency drills.
  • Report suspected abuse, neglect, and exploitation of participants immediately per program and agency policies and procedures.
  • Prepare, serve, and oversee feeding activities, including tube feeding, for daily snacks and lunches.
  • Maintain program areas, supplies, and equipment, ensuring they are clean, disinfected, stocked, and in good working order daily.
  • Employ assistive equipment and practices throughout the day when transporting, lifting, and working with participants.
  • Work cooperatively with the programming team to provide interesting and stimulating program activities appropriate for most participants, including recreation and educational enrichment.
  • Provide individualized assistance to participants in programs as needed.
  • Act as an appropriate role model for participants.
  • Encourage participants to socialize, communicate, and fulfill needs independently.
  • Redirect participants through positive actions.
  • Provide quality specialized services while being mindful of resource usage.
  • Stay abreast of emergency procedures and updates for each program scenario to ensure awareness of protocols in case of an emergency.
  • Participate in assigned meetings, professional development, and training as required.
  • Plan daily activities in advance and complete recordkeeping such as attendance and activity schedules.
*NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES*
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Serve as backup to various program staff by providing coverage and summarizing events upon their return.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • TB test required.
  • A Criminal Background Check must meet Wisconsin licensure requirements for day programming.
  • Experience providing ADLs (Activities of Daily Living), including toileting, ambulating, transfers, feeding, etc.

Preferred:

  • Current CPR, First Aid, CPI, and/or Universal Precautions training/license preferred.
  • Experience working with individuals with disabilities in health care or social service settings preferred.
  • On the Wisconsin Community-Based Care and Treatment Training Registry for Medication Administration preferred.
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification preferred.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation with proof of insurance preferred.

  • Assist individuals in and out of vehicles.
  • Exposure to loud/noisy environments and outdoor elements.
