Job description

This application is for people that have previously worked at Camp Seafarer.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Leadership development opportunity in a residential camp setting that provides a quality experience to campers and participants focused on the YMCA core values: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

Different types of roles at Camp:

  • Cabin counselors teach skills to campers, supervise and facilitate on their assigned activity, and are responsible for giving campers a great experience on the program. Activities that staff can work on include Aquatics, Sailing, Powerboating, Creative Arts, Paddle Sports, Athletics, Tennis, Golf, Target Sports, and Climbing Wall/Tower. Activities are assigned based on skill and certifications.
  • Nannies take care of the children of Directors and nurses who are 6 years old and under.
  • Operations Team members manage the logistics of the Dining Hall and the Camp Store.
  • The Admin Leadership Team manages activities or groups of campers and gives leadership to staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Attend Staff Training (June 1- June 6, 2025) to clearly understand and learn functions of the job.
  • Provide an environment of physical, mental, and spiritual safety for all campers and participants.
  • Reside in overnight cabins to ensure camper privacy, safety, and security, and to serve as a role model for the campers in your assigned cabin.
  • Understand the daily schedule and cabin routine.
  • Mentor and model responsible behavior.
  • Enhance teamwork and character among campers and participants.
  • Organize and supervise group activities as needed.
  • Assist campers with goal setting and celebrate accomplishments.
  • Plan and deliver nightly devotions and “goodnights.”
  • Monitor health and well-being of campers and oneself.
  • Positively participate and serve around Camp, which includes occasionally serving in the Dining Hall.

BASIC EXPECTATIONS:

  • Serve as a positive role model, accept responsibility, and take initiative.
  • Display core values in daily interactions.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and a can-do attitude.
  • Persevere through tough situations.
  • Make safety and privacy a Camp priority and pay attention to details.
  • Exhibit strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Be dependable, consistent, and able to work with different types of people.
  • Have a genuine interest in children and be able to care for them.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum 16 years of age at time of application. CILT (Camper in Leadership Training) experience preferred. 1-2 years’ experience working with children.
  • Must complete pre-arrival checklist, which includes virtual trainings, forms, direct deposit, etc.
  • Priority will be given to applicants who are available to work the entire summer.
  • Sex at birth must match the sex of camp cabin occupants.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • In addition to the above responsibilities, the person in this position must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, walk at least a mile without assistance, deal with conflict in a positive way, have the ability to work in high-stress situations, and be able to work very long hours in an outdoor camp environment.
  • Cabin counselors live in open-aired cabins with 10-13 campers and 1-2 co-counselors for the two-week or four-week sessions.
  • Cabin counselors cannot use their cell phones around campers and are asked to only use their cell phone before campers wake up, after they go to bed, or when they’re on time-off.
