Job description

The Camp Counselor is responsible for the planning, implementation, and facilitation of Frost Valley YMCA’s Summer Day Camp for campers aged 4-16. This position focuses on camper safety, activity planning, and ensuring a positive camp experience. Camp Counselors also serve as role models for Junior Counselors and are responsible for maintaining camper records, managing behavior, and communicating with parents as needed.

Requirements

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Camper Supervision and Safety:
    • Supervise a designated group of campers daily, ensuring their safety, well-being, and engagement in camp activities.
    • Program Planning and Preparation: Plan, prepare, and lead engaging weekly activities tailored to the interests and developmental levels of your camper group.
  2. Record Keeping:
    • Maintain accurate attendance, behavior, and daily paperwork for your assigned camper group.
  3. Role Modeling:
    • Serve as a positive role model for Junior Counselors, demonstrating professionalism, empathy, and a commitment to camp values.
    • Assist with basic communication with families, providing friendly and informative updates as needed.
  4. Safety Standards and Compliance:
    • Support safety protocols and help maintain compliance with American Camp Association and Ulster County Board of Health standards for a day camp serving over 200 campers per session.
  5. Coordinate with multiple departments to uphold the standards and reputation of Summer Day Camp and Frost Valley YMCA.
  6. Additional Duties:
    • Ride the bus from either Livingston Manor or Roscoe Elementary.
    • Perform other tasks as assigned to support the camp’s mission and daily operations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be a current student or graduate with either Livingston Manor or Roscoe school.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Prior experience working with children aged 4-16 or a strong interest in doing so.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, multitask, and handle high-energy environments.
  • Enthusiasm for working with children, teens, families, and camp staff.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.
  • The employee may be required to stand on their feet for long periods of time.
  • Employee must be able to occasionally traverse rough terrain.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Session 1: June 30th-July 25th

There will be three days of precamp: 2 days online and 1 in person.
