Job summary

YMCA of Greater Hartford seeks a Resident Camp Jr. Counselor to help supervise campers, lead activities, and maintain a safe, welcoming environment in Woodstock, CT.

You will support the Camp Director, participate in daily camp routines, and model YMCA values in all interactions with campers and families. Under guidance, you will assist with staff training, ensure timely attendance, communicate with parents, and uphold emergency procedures while contributing to a positive and inclusive camp

Qualifications

  • At least 17 years of age or completed Camp Jewell Counselor in Training Program.
  • Experience working with children is preferred.
  • Current certification in Standard First Aid and CPR for Professional Rescuer required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the implementation of promotional plans for program(s).
  • Create a climate in the unit that supports YMCA goals and objectives.
  • Maintain open communication with parents.
  • Provide a safe environment and program for all participants.
  • Demonstrate YMCA values in all interactions with campers, parents, host agencies, and staff.
  • Arrive on time, wear the appropriate uniform and name tag, and be prepared for assignments.
  • Assist with overnight camp cabins when not with day campers.
  • Support and contribute to a safe, clean environment.
  • Participate in staff training events and staff meetings.

Job Title: Resident Camp Jr. Counselor

Reports to: Camp Director

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Camp Director, the Resident Camp Jr. Counselor aids in supervising and effectively leading a group of campers in daily camp activities. Resident Camp Jr. Counselors provide a safe and nurturing environment for campers and are actively involved and have a positive attitude about all camp activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Assist with the implementation of promotional plans forprogram(s).
  • Create a climate in the unit that will foster the goals and objectives of theYMCA.
  • Maintain open communication withparents.
  • Provide a safe environment and program for allparticipants.
  • Demonstrate and promote YMCA Character Development to all members, participants, and communityby:
    • Caring: to be sensitive to the well-being of others; to helpothers
    • Honesty: to tell the truth; to be worthy of trust; to have integrity
    • Respect: to treat others as you would have them treat you; to value the worth of every person, including yourself
    • Responsibility: to do what you ought to do; to be accountable for yourbehavior and yourobligations
  • Is familiar with and carries out emergency procedures, building rules andregulations.
  • Arrive on time for scheduled shifts, wearing appropriate uniform and name tag, and prepared for all assignments.
  • When not working with day campers’ rangers will work in clinics andassist with an overnight campcabin.
  • Support and contribute to a safe, cleanenvironment.
  • Consistently provide friendly, courteous assistance, exceeding camper and parent’s expectations every day, which includes building andmaintaining healthy professional relationships with parents, children, hostagencies,and staff.
  • To participate and work cooperatively in all staff training events and staffmeetings.
  • In sympathy with, and committed to, carrying out the Mission of the YMCA of GreaterHartford.
  • To know and use counselor’s and camper’snames.
  • All other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • At least 17 years of age or have completed the Camp Jewell Counselor in Training Program
  • Prior experience working with children of groups preferred.
  • Person must possess values consistent with the mission of the YMCA.
  • Current certification in Standard First Aid and CPR for Professional Rescuer required.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:
  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds in weight.
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency
