Under supervision of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor or Leadworker, the incumbent performs maintenance work and operates equipment related to highway asset upkeep, including but not limited to: AC paving, pothole patching, mowing, debris removal, crack sealing, guard rail repair, and traffic control. Duties also include custodial tasks at maintenance stations, operating Category 3 vehicles requiring a Class C driver’s license, and possibly Category 2 equipment if licensed. The role may require working alone or with a crew, setting priorities independently, working in adverse weather, near heavy traffic, and responding to emergency calls. Shifts may include nights, weekends, holidays, or alternative schedules like 9/80 or 4/10.
Positions are located at 500 Queens Lane, San Jose, CA 95122, Santa Clara County. Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment. Eligibility depends on scoring on the Caltrans Highway Maintenance Worker exam, with specific requirements for current eligibility or examination registration.
Possession of a valid and unrestricted Class C driver’s license is mandatory for operating state vehicles. Verification of qualifications will occur before interviews or appointment. Foreign transcripts/degrees require evaluation for U.S. equivalency.
