Job summary

Sea-Bird Scientific in Bellevue, WA is seeking a Calibration Lead to serve as a technical leader within our Calibration organization. You will perform advanced calibrations on a broad range of instrumentation and manage calibration records.

The role requires an associate degree and at least four years in calibration or related environments; you will mentor technicians, drive continuous improvement, and collaborate with Quality, Manufacturing, Engineering, and R&D.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Develop and refine procedures, work instructions, and training materials.
• Identify opportunities to improve quality, efficiency, throughput, and reliability.
• Communicate priorities and risks effectively; back up departmental leadership when needed.

Overview

Sea‑Bird Scientific is a leading developer and manufacturer of oceanographic instruments. We are seeking a Calibration Lead to serve as a technical leader within our Calibration organization in Bellevue, WA.

Responsibilities

• Perform advanced calibrations on a broad range of instrumentation and sensor technologies using established procedures and industry best practices.
• Operate and maintain calibration equipment, including manual and hydraulic deadweight testers, pressure vessels, calibration baths, ovens and chillers, and specialized test and measurement equipment.
• Analyze calibration results and evaluate instrument performance, accuracy, and drift.
• Troubleshoot complex calibration, equipment, process, and product issues.
• Utilize proprietary software systems to manage work assignments, calibration records, equipment performance, and process documentation.
• Serve as the department’s primary technical escalation resource for challenging calibration and instrumentation issues.
• Coordinate daily workflow, establish priorities, and mentor and train technicians across multiple skill levels.
• Promote and reinforce best practices, quality standards, and safe work procedures.
• Identify opportunities to improve quality, efficiency, throughput, and process reliability.
• Lead or actively participate in Kaizen events and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Collaborate across functions (Quality, Manufacturing, Engineering, R&D, Operations) to resolve production challenges and improve overall operational performance.
• Support development and refinement of procedures, work instructions, and training materials.
• Communicate effectively regarding priorities, technical issues, and operational risks.
• Serve as a backup resource for departmental leadership as needed.

Required Qualifications

• Associate degree in a technical discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Minimum of four (4) years of experience in calibration, instrumentation, manufacturing, test, or related technical environments.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working within ISO, quality management, or regulated manufacturing environments.
• Lean manufacturing and continuous improvement experience.
• Experience supporting cross‑functional engineering or R&D initiatives.
• Formal technical training, certifications, or advanced coursework related to instrumentation, electronics, or calibration.
• Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to quality.

Physical Demands

• Sufficient visual acuity and manual dexterity to assess, manipulate, and assemble work, including small components.
• Frequent walking, climbing, balancing, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
• Standing or sitting for extended periods, reaching, using hands to finger, handle, feel or operate tools, controls, and computer keyboards.
• Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling up to fifty (50) pounds and/or frequently up to twenty (20) pounds.
• Exposure to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, chemicals, oils, salt water, and extreme temperatures.
• Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as eye, hearing, respiratory protection, protective smock, steel‑toe shoes, gloves, or face shields.
