Job summary

Mesa Labs in Bozeman, MT is seeking a Calibration Engineer to independently maintain, calibrate, test, and repair a range of analytical equipment used in laboratory and manufacturing environments.

You will ensure measurement accuracy and traceability, support ISO 17025, FDA, GMP compliance, maintain calibration records and spare parts inventories, and provide technical guidance to teammates while contributing to continuous improvement.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physics, Metrology, Electronics, or a related technical field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 2–4 years of experience in calibration, instrumentation, metrology, validation, or regulated laboratory/manufacturing environments.

Responsibilities

  • Calibrate, verify, test, and adjust analytical, test, and measurement equipment used in laboratory and manufacturing settings.
  • Perform minor repairs, component replacements, and basic circuit-level troubleshooting on instrumentation and equipment; elevate complex issues as appropriate.
  • Maintain measurement accuracy and traceability through adherence to recognized standards (e.g., ISO, NIST).
  • Support equipment qualification and validation activities to ensure fitness for use and regulatory compliance.
  • Evaluate equipment condition and performance to recommend repair, refurbishment, or replacement.

This position is eligible for an annual 10% bonus opportunity in addition to the base salary.

Job Summary

The Calibration Engineer independently maintains, tests, troubleshoots, calibrates, and repairs a variety of analytical, measurement, and instrumentation equipment used in laboratory and manufacturing environments. This role ensures the accuracy, reliability, and compliance of equipment through proper calibration practices, documentation, and continuous improvement efforts. The Calibration Engineer analyzes results, supports the development of test specifications and procedures, maintains calibration records and spare parts inventory, and provides technical recommendations to resolve equipment-related issues. The role works independently with flexibility over daily priorities and may provide work direction or technical guidance to others without formal supervisory authority.

Duties/Responsibilities
Calibration, Maintenance & Repair
  • Independently perform calibration, verification, testing, and adjustment of analytical, test, and measurement equipment used in laboratory and manufacturing settings.
  • Perform minor repairs, component replacements, and basic circuit-level troubleshooting on instrumentation and equipment; elevate complex electrical or system-level issues as appropriate.
  • Maintain measurement accuracy and traceability through adherence to recognized standards (e.g., ISO, NIST).
  • Support equipment qualification and validation activities to ensure fitness for use and regulatory compliance.
  • Evaluate equipment condition and performance to recommend repair, refurbishment, or replacement.
Troubleshooting, Analysis & Technical Contribution
  • Troubleshoot calibration failures, equipment malfunctions, and measurement discrepancies using systematic problem-solving techniques.
  • Analyze calibration and test results to identify trends, risks, or improvement opportunities.
  • Assist in the development and refinement of test specifications, calibration methods, and supporting technical documentation, including schematics or diagrams as applicable.
  • Prepare technical reports summarizing findings and recommending solutions to technical or compliance-related issues.
Documentation, Compliance & Quality Support
  • Maintain accurate calibration logs, equipment histories, certificates, and maintenance records in controlled systems.
  • Ensure documentation complies with applicable standards such as ISO 17025, FDA, GMP, and internal quality system requirements.
  • Support internal and external audits by providing documentation, technical explanations, and corrective action input as needed.
  • Ensure calibration records are complete, accurate, and audit-ready.
Asset, Inventory & Purchasing Support
  • Maintain awareness of spare parts and calibration-related inventory requirements.
  • Support spare parts management by identifying needed components and coordinating purchase requests or replacements.
  • Assist with specifying calibration-related components, accessories, or services to support equipment maintenance and uptime.
  • Partner with Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, and Operations teams to resolve equipment and calibration-related issues.
  • Provide technical guidance or work direction to junior calibration or technical staff as needed.
  • Contribute to the development, review, and improvement of calibration procedures, work instructions, and workflows.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve calibration efficiency, documentation clarity, and equipment reliability.
  • Maintain professional knowledge of calibration technologies, tools, and best practices through training and continuous learning.
Experience/Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physics, Metrology, Electronics, or a related technical field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 2–4 years of experience in calibration, instrumentation, metrology, validation, or regulated laboratory/manufacturing environments.
Knowledge and Skillsets Required
  • Working knowledge of calibration principles, instrumentation, and measurement uncertainty.
  • Experience troubleshooting analytical and measurement equipment, including basic circuit or component-level issues.
  • Familiarity with regulatory and quality standards such as ISO 17025, FDA, GMP, and NIST traceability.
  • Ability to analyze test results and contribute to test specifications and technical documentation.
  • Strong attention to detail, documentation accuracy, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently with flexibility while collaborating across functions.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and calibration, asset, or maintenance management systems.
