Job summary

Hico Independent School District is seeking a dedicated Cafeteria Worker to assist in food preparation, serving meals to students and staff, and maintaining a clean, sanitary kitchen and dining area.

The role requires adhering to recipes, portion control, and safe handling of food. Candidate should have a high school diploma or GED and a valid Texas driver’s license; prior food service experience is preferred. Salary is based on experience and includes health insurance and other incentives.

  • Record daily food preparation and requisitions; coordinate with staff.

Primary Purpose: To assist with a variety of cooking, baking, preparing and serving of food items for general consumption by students and school personnel and to maintain facilities and equipment in safe and sanitary condition. Operate the district's computerized point of sale system & handle cash and check transactions. Maintain a clean and safe work area in HISD cafeteria.
Reports to: Cafeteria Manager

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Food Preparation and Serving
  • Prepare quality food according to a planned menu of tested and uniform recipes.
  • Serve food according to meal schedules, departmental policies, and procedures, and practice and promote portion control and proper use of leftovers.
  • Store and handle food items and supplies safely and according to established procedures. Maintain a clean and organized storage area.
Safety and Sanitation
  • Operate tools and equipment according to prescribed safety standards, and follow established procedures to meet high standards of cleanliness, health, and safety.
  • Keep garbage collection containers and areas neat and sanitary.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
  • Maintain personal appearance and hygiene.
Other
  • Handle and record cashier functions accurately.
  • Help record food requisitions and order necessary supplies.
  • Maintain daily food preparation records.
  • Promote teamwork and interaction with fellow staff members.
  • Complete annual continuing education requirements.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid Texas driver's license.
  • Previous experience in food preparation.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Experience
  • Any combination equivalent to: high school diploma or equivalent and some experience in food service operations.
Equipment Used
  • Includes but is not limited to: Electric slicer, mixer, pressure steamer, deep-fat fryer, sharp cutting tools, oven, dishwasher, and food/utility carts.
Mental/Physical/Environmental Demands:

Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, walking, pushing, and pulling; moderate lifting and carrying; some stooping, bending, and kneeling. Limited exposure to extreme heat and cold.
