The International House at UC Berkeley is seeking a part-time Cafe Shift Assistant for Edmonds Café in Berkeley, CA. You will deliver high-quality customer service, prepare beverages and food, operate the POS, and help train student workers during evening shifts (3-7 pm PST).

Responsibilities

  • Follow Edmonds Café policies, safety and security standards, and health regulations.
  • Assist with opening/closing duties and train student workers on shift.
  • Support inventory counts, receiving deliveries, and FIFO inventory practices.

Position Title: Cafe Shift Assistant,Edmonds Cafe


Schedule: Part-time, up to 20 hours/week, primarily working the evening shift from 3 - 7 pm (PST)


About this Position:


The Café Shift Assistant supports the day-to-day operations of Edmonds Café by providing consistent, high-quality customer service and ensuring café standards are upheld during each shift. This role is hands‑on and service-focused, with responsibilities that include preparing coffee and beverages, assisting with food service, operating the point-of-sale system, maintaining a clean and safe workspace, and supporting opening and closing procedures. The Café Shift Assistant also helps guide and train student workers on shift, communicates important shift updates, and supports inventory and compliance needs to ensure smooth and efficient café operations.


Key Responsibilities:

Cafe Operations


  • Deliver excellent customer service by engaging with guests and responding to customer needs

  • Operate the point-of-sale system, follow drink recipes, and prepare menu items including artisanal coffee beverages, beer, wine, and food

  • Maintain cleanliness of the café, service areas, and workstations, including completing closing duties at the end of each shift

  • Follow Edmonds Café operational policies and procedures, including payment handling, safety, and security standards

  • Comply with all local, state, and federal health and sanitation regulations

  • Follow café liquor license requirements and policies related to beer and wine sales, service, and consumption

  • Assist with opening and closing duties as scheduled

  • Support training and onboarding of student workers across coffee and beverage stations (including beer and wine service for those who are RBS certified)

  • Provide day-to-day guidance and support to student workers during shifts in the absence of management

  • Assist with coaching student workers on customer service expectations and café procedures

  • Communicating shift updates and notes to management as needed

  • Monitor stock levels and assist with regular inventory counts

  • Receive and unpack deliveries, reconcile items with invoices, and assist with organizing storeroom shelves

  • Rotate products and follow FIFO (first-in, first-out) inventory practices

  • Help maintain clean, organized, and safe storeroom areas


Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications


  • Prior experience working in a cafe or restaurant environment

  • Prior experience supervising or mentoring student employees or volunteers

  • Ability tomaintainregular and reliable attendance and punctuality

  • Access to reliable transportation

  • RBS server certification is ideal, notrequired

  • Strong customer service, interpersonal communication, and multitasking skills

  • Experience with guest service standards, point-of-sale systems, and inventory processes preferred


Working Conditions


  • This role regularly requires work on evenings, weekends, and some holidays. Hours may vary from week to week depending on organizational needs.The ideal candidate will be able to work flexible hours that include evenings.

  • This is a fast-paced environment with extended periods of standing or walking, up to 6-8 hours per workday. In addition, I-House has stairs that you may need to climb often and quickly in this position.

  • Ability to regularly lift, move, and carry up to 30 pounds


Compensation and Benefits


  • FLSA Status: Non-exempt, part-time (up to 20 hours per week)

  • Pay range: $24- $25 paid hourly, eligible for overtime

  • Pay is commensurate with experience and qualifications.

  • This role is not eligible for group health benefits or retirement

  • Time-off: this role accrues paid sick time in compliance with state and city law

  • Location: This role requires on-site presence and engagement in Berkeley, CA. No remote work options are available for this role.
