The State of Washington is seeking a Youth Academy Residential Specialist 4 to supervise staff and lead at-risk youth at the Washington Youth Challenge Academy. This role involves overseeing training, maintaining facilities, and ensuring positive youth development. This recruitment is open on an internal basis for current state employees within the Washington State Military Department.

This position reports to the Youth Academy Residential Specialist 5, Commandant of the Washington Youth Challenge Academy (WYCA). The Youth Academy Residential Specialist 4 (working title: Cadre Supervisor) provides staff supervision, cadet leadership, and facility supervision, including during non-traditional hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
The mission of the Military Department is to provide trained professionals and operational forces ready to defend our state and nation, respond to emergencies and disasters, and enhance community resiliency through structured alternative education opportunities for at-risk youth.
The WYCA was established under the authority of the National Guard Youth Challenge Program. It includes a 22-week residential academy followed by a 24-month post-residential mentoring phase. The program aims to provide a disciplined, safe, and professional environment that empowers at-risk youth to improve their education and become responsible, productive citizens.

High school diploma or GED and four years of experience working with at-risk youth or related fields such as youth services, social services, military, education, or law enforcement. Two years of college may substitute for one year of experience.
Wage depends on qualifications. Must pass a physical fitness and agility test, background checks, and adhere to drug and alcohol policies. Must possess a valid driver’s license and meet REAL ID requirements. Willingness to work shift hours, including beyond core hours, and participate in training and travel as needed.
The position is represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE). Due to the nature of the work, this position is not eligible for telework.
