Job Description:

Position Information: Responsible for assisting faculty and instructors with various needs during labs and helping students during open labs. Provides technical and administrative assistance to laboratory staff and students by maintaining equipment and supplies, preparing materials. Additional duties may include support of science activities and day-to-day functions.

Essential Duties:

  • Maintains a variety of laboratory equipment by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, performing preventive maintenance, and calling for repairs.
  • Maintains glassware and other equipment by picking up, cleaning, washing, sterilizing, and distributing.
  • Maintains lab and common areas, equipment, and instruments in a clean, organized, and safe condition including daily and end-of-semester cleaning.
  • Performs daily inspections of cadaveric specimens.
  • Performs dissection and maintenance of cadaveric specimens.
  • Collects, sorts, and delivers laundry.
  • Prepares, sets up, and tears down stations, equipment, models, specimens, course materials, consumables, and ensures cleanliness of the laboratory.
  • Keeps laboratory supplies ready by inventorying stock, placing orders, and verifying receipt; this includes labeling, sorting, and storing supplies.
  • Develops and schedules for the laboratory staff; this includes lab review sessions.
  • Assists in the preparation of materials including teaching or research materials.
  • Provides assistance to laboratory staff and students; this includes monitoring students in open lab sessions.
  • Provides administrative assistance to laboratory staff and students by answering phones, running miscellaneous errands, and maintaining daily logs and equipment records.
  • Maintains a safe working environment in the labs with appropriate collection and disposal of biological specimens.
  • Reports hazards to management, Department Head, or Lead Instructor.
  • Completes all mandatory training.
  • Records and maintains work performed in labs including, but not limited to, activities performed on cadavers.
  • May also be required to prepare for experiments and processing biological samples.
  • Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.
Job Requirements:

Qualifications:

Required Education: Bachelor's degree in Biological Science, Health Sciences, or related discipline.

Working Conditions:

Physical:

  • Standing for prolonged periods. Manual dexterity. Reaching, standing, bending, stooping, walking, and lifting up to 100 pounds. Pushing and pulling.

Environmental:

  • Research laboratory environment.
  • Exposure to chemicals, fumes/airborne particles, hazardous materials, and equipment noise.
  • May use acid or autoclave equipment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to pay attention to detail as well as organizational skills.
  • Computer proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Knowledge of laboratory practices and procedures and willingness to review anatomy materials.
  • Ability to record and maintain reports and detailed logs on tasks performed.
  • Knowledge of cleaning and sterilization best practices.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to safely operate and utilize dissection instruments, including sharp objects such as scalpels and power tools.
  • Ability to work effectively with faculty and students.
  • Ability to handle and clean laboratory equipment and glassware.

Preferences:

  • Prior cadaver dissection experience.
