Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced CAD Designer to support fiber optic and telecommunications
projects throughout the New York/New Jersey Metro Area. The ideal candidate will have strong
CAD drafting skills and experience designing and documenting Outside Plant (OSP) and Inside
Plant (ISP) telecommunications infrastructure.
In this role, you will prepare cable plans, construction drawings, and project proposals for
customers and construction crews. You will work with aerial, underground, manhole, building-
riser, and fiber optic cable systems while ensuring designs are accurate, constructible, and
aligned with applicable requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop cable plans, construction drawings, and project proposals using the latest version of CAD software.
- Design and document new and existing aerial, underground, and manhole cable runs from carrier facilities to customer locations.
- Design and review Inside Plant (ISP) cable routes through building risers and other interior pathways.
- Map cable routes, splice locations, pathways, and related telecommunications infrastructure.
- Verify continuity for aerial and underground systems associated with new construction.
- Conduct field surveys and assist with engineering construction plans for fiber optic cabling in both ISP and OSP applications.
- Perform aerial and underground make-ready surveys.
- Support outside plant route selection, verification, and documentation.
- Prepare drawings and documentation required to support construction permitting.
- Review existing designs and update drawings based on field conditions and project requirements.
- Collaborate with clients, engineers, construction crews, field personnel, and internal project teams.
- Maintain accurate records of survey findings, project designs, construction details, and implementation information.
- Prepare comprehensive project reports and documentation for clients and internal teams.
- Ensure drawings and project documentation are organised, accurate, and suitable for distribution and construction use.
Required CAD Skills
Candidates must be proficient in basic CAD drafting and understand the fundamental tools and
functions available in AutoCAD or comparable CAD software, including:
including:
- Basic drafting and drawing techniques.
- Trim, Extend, Hatch, Split, Sketch, and other fundamental CAD tools.
- Understanding and use of viewports in Paper Space.
- Reading and creating basic floor plans.
- Reading and creating basic sections and riser details.
- Publishing DWG drawings to PDF.
- Using Overkill and Purge to optimise drawings and reduce file sizes for sharing.
- Converting PDF files to DWG.
- Understanding that project drawings may not be prepared to scale and accurately interpreting project-specific drawing requirements.
Qualifications
- 3–5 years of experience as a CAD Designer in a fiber optic, CATV, telecommunications, or related engineering environment.
- College degree preferred; relevant hands-on industry experience may be substituted for a degree.
- Experience preparing drawings for construction permits preferred.
- Experience with NYC ECS systems preferred.
- Experience working with CATV providers such as Comcast and Altice strongly preferred.
- Proficiency with CAD software, surveying tools, and GIS applications.
- Knowledge of fiber optic telecommunications infrastructure and OSP/ISP design practices.
- Familiarity with telecommunications regulatory requirements and permitting processes.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, floor plans, riser diagrams, and telecommunications drawings.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate project documentation.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with engineering, construction, and client teams.
Field Travel
Must be willing to travel to customer sites throughout Northern New Jersey and New York City as required.
Travel expenses will be covered by the company.
Field responsibilities may include:
- Underground make-ready surveys.
- OSP route selection and verification.
- Field verification of existing cable infrastructure.
- Documentation of cable routes, splice points, riser, manholes, and other telecommunications facilities.
- Collection of field information necessary to develop accurate CAD and construction drawings.
Documentation & Reporting
The CAD Designer will be responsible for maintaining clear and accurate project documentation,
including:
- Survey findings and field observations.
- OSP and ISP route information.
- Cable and splice locations.
- Construction and engineering drawings.
- Permit-related drawings and documentation.
- Project design updates and revisions.
- Implementation and construction details.
- Client and internal project reports.
