Job description

About the role

As a CAD/CAM CNC Programming Engineer, you will write and refine the programs that power automated machine tools to produce precision metal components. You will translate drawings and specifications into efficient, accurate toolpaths and ensure every part meets design intent.

A day in the life

You begin by reviewing job orders, blueprints, and design data. You plan the machining strategy—selecting tools, establishing the operation sequence, and calculating spindle speeds and feed rates. You determine datums, cutting paths, and hole locations and compute linear/angular dimensions, radii, and curvatures to drive accurate tool motion.

Next, you author programs in the controller’s native language or within a CAM platform and store them on company network drives. You may run simulations or conduct trial cuts to validate motion and clamp strategies. If an issue appears, you revise the code or CAM strategies to remove errors, then retest until the result is right. You compare program outputs and computer printouts to original drawings to verify compliance, and you continuously improve existing programs for cycle-time and quality gains. You also enter commands to save and retrieve part patterns, graphical data, or transfer programs to other media as needed.

What you know
  • Mathematics: arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics—and how to apply them on the shop floor.
  • Machines and tooling, including design, application, upkeep, and repair.
  • Engineering science and technology as applied to product and process design and production.
  • Materials, manufacturing processes, quality control, cost drivers, and methods to optimize throughput and distribution.
  • Programming for CNC equipment.
  • Complex problem solving and sound judgment, weighing costs and benefits to pick the best path forward.
  • 2D drafting and solid modeling using AutoCAD or SolidWorks, including the ability to mark up drawings to create clear manufacturing prints.
Background we look for
  • Hands‑on machinist experience.
  • Control‑based programming (conversational and/or G & M codes).
  • CAM programming.
  • CAD experience in 2D and solid modeling.
Work environment
  • Typical schedule is 40 hours per week and may include on‑call, evenings, and/or weekends.
  • Ability to lift and maneuver 50 lbs.
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.

Additional responsibilities and duties may be assigned.
