The Senior Attorney, Unaccompanied Children’s Program, is part of the supervisory team at Cabrini Center, helping set strategic priorities and develop policies for the program. This role supervises a legal team providing immigration legal services, including outreach, education, intake, research, and individual representation. The Senior Attorney should possess expertise in immigration law, stay current on legal policies, and mentor attorneys, paralegals, interns, and pro bono counsel. The role also involves identifying issues for advocacy and systemic change to promote immigrant rights.

Responsibilities include:

  • Direct Representation: Represent clients before USCIS, Immigration Court, and other agencies, handling cases such as asylum and removal defense. Tasks include intake, interviews, drafting petitions, legal research, and preparing clients for hearings.
  • Case Management: Maintain case files, track case status, and ensure active caseload of 30-40 cases.
  • Meetings: Conduct team and individual meetings, participate in agency and funder meetings, and collaborate with community groups.
  • Compliance: Ensure adherence to contracts, compile data, and participate in training and reporting.
  • Outreach: Engage in legal consultations, community education, and workshops, involving pro bono counsel as needed.
  • Personnel Supervision: Oversee legal staff and interns, providing evaluations and guidance.
  • Legal Expertise Development: Build knowledge in immigration areas like U visas, T visas, VAWA, and naturalization.
  • Advocacy: Promote policy changes and community engagement to support immigrant rights.
  • Program Oversight: Develop policies, evaluate program efficacy, and ensure high-quality legal services.
  • Shelter Operations: Oversee shelter staffing and operations, managing stakeholder relationships.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Required:

  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school
  • Licensed or eligible to take the Texas Bar within one year
  • At least one year of leadership or supervisory experience
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English

  • Strong legal research and writing skills
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills
  • Ability to manage a high-volume caseload
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Experience with immigrant communities and multicultural understanding
