We are seeking a talented Cable Design Engineer to design and develop cable assemblies for complex electronic systems used in demanding aerospace, defense and rugged industrial environments. This individual will own cable designs while collaborating across engineering disciplines to ensure product reliability, manufacturability and compliance with customer requirements and industry standards.
Responsibilities
- Create cable designs based on customer requirements, military specifications and industry standards
- Research and select appropriate electrical components, including connectors, backshells, wire types, shielding, protective sleeving and labeling based on system requirements and operating environments
- Model complex 3D cable harnesses in a CAD environment to determine proper routing and lengths
- Collaborate across engineering disciplines to define cable routing, tie-downs, pinouts and other design requirements
- Work with Manufacturing Engineers and suppliers to establish standards for reliable and repeatable designs
- Define wiring requirements for signal integrity, power distribution and grounding while ensuring appropriate EMI protection
- Generate and maintain engineering documentation, including drawings, bills of materials (BOMs) and engineering change notices (ECNs)
- Incorporate design for manufacturability (DFM) feedback to improve engineering handoffs to manufacturing
- Evaluate existing designs and identify opportunities to improve cable documentation and design practices
- Develop cost-effective and efficient cable designs, standardizing component selection and design practices to minimize engineering changes and increase design reuse
- Participate in customer design reviews and support regular customer calls during the development phase
- Lead efforts to document cable design best practices, design guidelines and related processes
Requirements/Qualifications
- Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling; SolidWorks experience is a plus
- Altium experience is a plus for candidates without 3D CAD experience
- Minimum of 5 years of experience working with or collaborating with major interconnect and cable assembly manufacturers
