Job summary

Chain Electric Company in Abilene, TX seeks an entry-level Apprentice C to safely perform skilled electrical work on underground and overhead distribution systems.

You will learn apprenticeship-style skills, assist with installation, maintenance, and repair, and potentially supervise ground personnel as you progress toward journeyman lineman.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Assist with installation, operation, maintenance and repair of overhead and underground electrical power lines and systems.
• Climb poles or use truck-mounted buckets to access equipment and work at heights.
• Safely construct, maintain, and repair electrical overhead and underground distribution systems and substations, including conduits, cables, wires and related equipment.
• Verify proper grounding of truck.
• Identify defective sectionalizing devices, circuit breakers, fuses, voltage regulators, transformers, switches, relays, or wiring.
• String wire conductors and cables between poles, towers, trenches, pylons and buildings, setting lines in place.
• Attach cross-arms, insulators and auxiliary equipment to poles prior to installing them.
• Dig holes, using augers, and set poles using cranes and power equipment
• Cut trenches for laying underground cables, using trenchers and cable plows
• Splice or solder cables together or to overhead transmission lines, customer service lines, or street light lines
• Cut and peel lead sheathing and insulation from defective or newly installed cables and conduits prior to splicing
• Clean, tin, and splice corresponding conductors by twisting ends together or by joining ends with metal clamps and soldering connections
• Pull up cable by hand from large reels mounted on trucks
• Lay underground cable directly in trenches, or string it through conduit running through the trenches

Job description

The entry level Apprentice C safely performs skilled electrical work in the construction, repair, maintenance, storm restoration and operation of underground and overhead electrical distribution systems. The work involves the performance of skilled tasks in accordance with standard trade practices. Little to no independent decision making is required, although may occasionally supervise groundman, other apprentices or truck drivers and operators. As an entry level position, the apprentice should be learning apprenticeship-type skills and learning and practicing principles and procedures required for advancing to the next level in becoming a journeyman lineman.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

Desired Skills and Experience:

High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED). Completion of a Lineman training school preferred.
