Job summary

Summary

Effectively manages risk selection for both new and renewal business in an assigned Commercial Lines underwriting territory for Limited Service Carrier / ERP Agents. Influence overall profitability, rate adequacy and acceptability of risks being placed in CAR, while also handling some voluntary business within these assigned agents. Ability to navigate fluently through the CAR manual including bulletins which can include updated rule changes. Ability to build and maintain strong relationships through agents, Business Development Representatives and Voluntary new and renewal underwriters.

What You'll Do
  • Effectively manages risk selection in an assigned underwriting territory through analysis of the information presented. Assess submissions, categorize and direct on next steps to be taken based on assessment of risk. Ensure all submissions are effectively managed. Refers accounts as appropriate, if additional authority is required. Selects, declines or provides alternatives for the risks reviewed and exercises judgment in pricing acceptable risks and binding the company to exposures within the scope of their authority. Underwrites in one or more states.
  • Analysis is completed through the use of established underwriting authority levels, guidelines, procedures and philosophies. Researches and documents underwriting issues and develops solutions. Exercises discretion with regard to guidelines and procedures when warranted.
  • Effectively manages risk selection in an assigned underwriting territory through analysis of the information presented. Assess submissions, categorize and direct on next steps to be taken based on assessment of risk. Ensure all submissions are effectively managed. Refers accounts as appropriate, if additional authority is required. Selects, declines or provides alternatives for the risks reviewed and exercises judgment in pricing acceptable risks and binding the company to exposures within the scope of their authority. Underwrites in one or more states. Represents the Company at industry meetings and hearings as requested.
  • Maintains a comprehensive knowledge of the Company's insurance products, pricing, underwriting guidelines and philosophies. Interprets and communicates policy language, coverages, endorsements and Company philosophies. Functions as a technical resource for agents and company staff.
  • Maintains productive relationships with unit members and other departments. Assists other underwriters in meeting goals. Assists in the training and development of underwriting staff. Within assigned authority, reviews and approves referrals from developing underwriters and provides feedback.
  • Closely works with the Special Investigation Unit to order investigations on questionable accounts. Ability to identify inconsistencies in various underwriting documents such as contractual agreements, tax forms, financial statements, lease agreements, owner-operator agreements, etc. Is able to effectively and diplomatically communicate findings of investigative reports to agents and is able to handle challenging conversations with ease.
  • Develops a personal training program to continue to improve knowledge, skills and ability. Participates in training courses identified by management.
  • Provides technical assistance and training for staff regarding CAR rules, use of the CAR manual and identification of red flags associated with fraud and means to validate CAR eligibility including validating risk meets CAR definitions for eligibility based on Massachusetts domicile requirements. Participates in intra and interdepartmental committees and work groups.
  • Comply with all CAR Rules, Procedures and Rating Requirements as published by CAR and defined in the Limited Servicing Carrier Program.

What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's Degree or professional level of knowledge in a specialized field, or equivalent, related experience.
  • 2 - 4 years - or Associates Degree equivalent plus 4 - 6 years.
  • Prior experience as a Commercial Lines Underwriter I or equivalent at another insurer, or underwriting services supervisor is required. Demonstrates ability to exercise business judgement, effective oral and written communications, sales and negotiations skills, analytical skills, and time management within the current job assignment.

Pay Transparency: The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by several factors including skills, experience, education, certifications, and location. Some roles at Mapfre are eligible for commission and/or bonus earnings, in addition to salary, calculated based upon factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.

Salary Range: $58,800 - $77,800
