General Summary
The Buyer-in-Training (BIT) position is the entry-level role in CarMax’s Merchandising department. Under supervision, BITs acquire and manage CarMax’s used car inventory through customer appraisals, appraisal offers, coordinating onsite Wholesale Auctions, and attending regional auctions. The program lasts approximately 4-6 months and includes training on vehicle basics, market analytics, and offsite behaviors.
Principle Duties And Responsibilities
- Independently evaluate and negotiate market prices, assess vehicle damage and costs, and make sound purchasing and pricing decisions based on customer assessments, offers, and auction participation.
- Conduct vehicle appraisal offers, coordinate onsite Wholesale Auctions, and attend offsite auctions as assigned.
- Accurately assess vehicle condition by collecting, recording, and communicating relevant information.
- Provide exceptional customer service and collaborate with other departments to create memorable customer experiences.
- Support the implementation of new store procedures, processes, and technology platforms.
- Use technology effectively for team collaboration across locations.
- Execute initiatives including Offer Role and Offsite programs.
- Complete the Buyer-in-Training program successfully.

- Valid Driver’s License required.

- Primarily outdoor work, sometimes in noisy or inclement weather.
