The Business Services Specialist, Marquette University Press is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Marquette University Press, a scholarly book publishing house specializing in the humanities with emphasis on Philosophy and Theology. Duties include production, sales, distribution, and inventory management of titles as well as overseeing the warehouse and sales fulfillment center. This position is responsible for accounting functions including budget planning, receivables and payables. This part-time position requires a commitment of 20 hours per week.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Oversee the production and printing of books. Receive and distribute books and track sales information.

2. Complete all financial reporting and budget responsibilities regarding publishing including but not limited to:

  • Completing all accounts receivable and payables.
  • Reconciling all financial transactions and completing any needed financial reporting.
  • Keeping and maintaining inventory data.
  • Handling eBooks and print-on-demand work, reprints; create and manage metadata (providing detailed information about each work to be read by algorithms).

3. Manage relationships with authors, agents, buyers, and reviewers. Carry out permissions research and royalty work (coordinating publishers’ receipts with royalty rates specified in author contracts to manage accurate payouts).

4. Work with fulfillment house on book orders, problem solving, and record keeping.

5. Oversee and implement all advertising and marketing related to publishing:
  • Coordinate and implement book displays for conferences.
  • Create and maintain all social media surrounding publishing.
  • Create and maintain mailing list of key contacts needed for any advertising. promotions; social media, catalog work, mailing list maintenance.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Associate’s or vocational/ technical school degree preferably in accounting or related field

A minimum of 3 years of related experience


Knowledge of MAC operating system, Microsoft office, especially Excel, and Adobe Pro


Basic understanding of social media


Ability to prioritize, organize, and work independently


Strong analytic capability and math aptitude


Ability to problem solve under pressure


Ability to build effective relationships

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field

Supervisory experience

Familiarity with QuickBooks, Adobe products such as InDesign and Photoshop

Basic IT skills (ability to navigate multiple software applications and web platforms)

A background in publishing
