Job summary

Pilot Thomas Logistics is seeking a Business Analyst to support the Operations leadership by delivering clear, actionable analysis that improves fleet utilization, driver productivity, service reliability, and transportation cost efficiency across multi-region operations.

You will focus on execution, variance identification, and continuous improvement, providing weekly and monthly summaries for senior leaders and supporting fleet sizing and capital planning decisions.

Qualifications

• 3–7+ years in transportation, logistics, or fleet-based operations analytics.
• Strong understanding of truck/driver productivity, routing, and fleet cost drivers.
• Experience with BI tools and Excel for data modeling and dashboards.

Responsibilities

• Track and analyze key operational KPIs across regions, terminals, products and truck types.
• Compare performance across regions, terminals, products, truck types, and driver shifts.
• Identify root causes of inefficiencies tied to routing, scheduling, supply constraints, and cost above budget.
• Provide weekly and monthly operational summaries for leadership.
• Analyze fleet utilization by truck type and terminal.
• Track maintenance cost per mile, downtime, and PM compliance.
• Identify aging asset risks and under-utilized equipment.
• Support fleet sizing, replacement timing, and capital planning decisions.
• Break down labor, fuel, maintenance, and equipment costs into simple summaries.
• Support directors and VP with ad-hoc analysis for region and terminal performance issues.

Job description

The Business Analyst supports the Operations leadership team by delivering clear, actionable analysis that improves fleet utilization, driver productivity, service reliability, and transportation cost efficiency across a multi-region, multi-terminal, multi-truck, and multi-product transportation business.

This role will be involved in daily operations and focus on execution, variance identification, and continuous improvement.

• Pay: Competitive salary and paid weekly.

• Candidates can live in either the Knoxville, TN or Phoenix, AZ areas.

Essential Functions:

• Track and analyze key operational KPIs.
• Compare performance across regions, terminals, products, truck types, and driver shifts
• Identify root causes of inefficiencies tied to routing, scheduling, supply constraints, and cost above budget.
• Provide weekly and monthly operational summaries for leadership.
• Analyze fleet utilization by truck type and terminal.
• Track maintenance cost per mile, downtime, and PM compliance.
• Identify aging asset risks and under-utilized equipment.
• Support fleet sizing, replacement timing, and capital planning decisions.
• Break down labor, fuel, maintenance, and equipment costs into simple summaries.
• Support and verify decisions with data on Driver payroll, route design changes, equipment assignments, terminal staffing levels, and service model adjustments
• Quantify operational trade-offs between service, cost, and capacity.
• Support directors and vice president with ad-hoc analysis for: Region and Terminal performance issues, service disruptions, cost overruns, customer network or terminal changes
• Turn operational questions and inquiries into simple decision ready insights
• Partner directly with field leadership to validate findings and assumptions
• Maintains compliance with all PTL policies and procedures
• Other duties as assigned
• 3-7+ years in transportation, logistics, or fleet-based operations analytics
• Strong understanding of truck/driver productivity, routing, and fleet cost drivers
• Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, modeling, Power Query preferred)
• Experience with BI tools (Power BI, Tableau, or similar)
• Comfortable working with imperfect real-world operational data and feedback
• Fuel, lubricants, bulk, or hazardous materials truck transportation delivery preferred
• DOT / HOS exposure and driver pay models preferred
• TMS, telematics, and fleet maintenance systems preferred
• SQL or data querying experience preferred

Education:

Bachelor's degree in business, data analytics, or similar field strongly preferred

Working Conditions:

• Extended schedule may be required as dictated by management and business needs
• Must be able to occasionally lift as much as ten (10) lbs.
• May be required to sit and review information on a computer screen for long periods of time
