Job description

Description

Do you enjoy hands-on technical work, solving problems in the field, and working directly with business customers? Are you comfortable managing installs from the physical fiber connection through the final customer handoff?

IdeaTek is looking for a Business Fiber Technician to install, configure, and support fiber and voice services for our business customers throughout Wichita and surrounding communities.

This role is heavily focused on business fiber installation and field service, with additional responsibility for VoIP and related communications systems. You’ll work in a variety of commercial environments—from construction sites and utility spaces to offices and server rooms—while serving as a knowledgeable, professional point of contact for business owners and internal partners.

A Day in the Life

Your day may start with a business fiber installation, where you’ll run and terminate fiber, install the appropriate equipment, and make sure the customer’s service is working as expected. From there, you may troubleshoot a connectivity issue, configure a VoIP phone system, replace ONT equipment, or work through a more complex commercial install.

You’ll also review service requirements before arriving on-site, coordinate with customers and internal teams, document configurations, and make sure you have the right tools and materials for each job. Every environment is different, so strong technical judgment, organization, and communication are essential.

What You’ll Do

Key responsibilities include:

  • Install, configure, and repair fiber optic services for commercial and business customers.

  • Independently complete business installations from the service terminal to the customer premises, including fiber drops, ONT equipment, gateways, and related hardware.

  • Diagnose and resolve connectivity and service issues while minimizing disruption to customer operations.

  • Install, configure, and support VoIP phone systems, including phones, related hardware, and customer-specific configurations.

  • Conduct customer discovery to understand connectivity, voice, and equipment needs before and during installation.

  • Review contracts, site plans, service requirements, and technical documentation to prepare for installations.

  • Support advanced and complex commercial installations across a variety of business environments and infrastructure types.

  • Provide a professional on-site experience and serve as a knowledgeable resource for business customers regarding fiber, gateways, WiFi, and voice services.

  • Document installations, equipment configurations, troubleshooting steps, and customer-specific information for future support.

  • Maintain working knowledge of aerial and underground fiber networks serving commercial areas.

  • Safely operate bucket trucks and perform aerial and underground work as required.

  • Ensure required tools, equipment, and materials are prepared and available for scheduled installations.

  • Partner with internal teams to elevate advanced technical issues and ensure a smooth customer experience.

  • Contribute to process improvement initiatives and other technical projects as needed.

What We’re Looking For

To be considered for this role, you’ll need the following required qualifications:

  • 2+ years of relevant work experience in fiber, telecom, low-voltage, field service, or another hands-on technical role, with interest in supporting business customers and commercial environments.

  • Valid driver’s license with no restrictions.

  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and lift up to 80 lbs.

  • Comfortable working in underground and aerial environments, including climbing ladders up to 32 ft.

  • Ability to enter and operate a bucket truck with a weight limit of 300 lbs.

  • Flexible schedule with the ability to work an on-call rotation, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as well as regular Saturdays and/or Sundays.

What Will Help You Stand Out

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in telecommunications, broadband, fiber, or commercial installation environments.

  • Experience working with business or commercial customers.

  • Familiarity with ONTs and phone hardware.
