Job description

We’re a fast-growing, purpose-driven B2B financial services company built on integrity, accountability, and continuous growth. We have developed our own proprietary insurance product for employers which is scaling rapidly. Our leadership team brings proven expertise from multiple sectors of finance, and every team member plays a direct role in expanding both our clients’ success and our company’s vision. We unlock capital to empower teams!

About the Role

First Gen is looking for a Business Engineer — a hybrid developer and business strategist who can move fluidly between writing code and shaping how the business actually runs. This role sits at the intersection of engineering, product, and operations: you'll build and ship low-code and AI-powered solutions that solve real business problems, while also helping envision and drive the broader product roadmap.

This is not a ticket-queue role. We’re one of the fastest growing companies in our industry — and we need someone who can take a business problem, architect a solution, and ship it. If you're equally comfortable in a database schema and a stakeholder conversation, and energized rather than overwhelmed by a fast, high-change environment, you'll fit here.

What You'll Do
  • Design, build, and ship internal tools and customer-facing features using low-code/no-code platforms alongside traditional development
  • Apply AI and automation to streamline workflows, reduce manual work, and unlock new business capabilities across operations, customer success, finance, and distribution
  • Partner with leadership and cross-functional teams to translate business goals into buildable solutions and help shape the product roadmap
  • Own solutions end-to-end — from scoping and technical design through build, launch, and iteration — without needing a project manager to hold the pieces together
  • Work directly with large, complex datasets to model data, optimize performance, and ensure solutions scale as we grow
  • Translate ambiguous business needs into clear technical requirements and working prototypes, quickly
  • Identify opportunities where technology can create business leverage and proactively pitch and build the solution
  • Move fast: ship, learn, and iterate in a high-velocity, high-ownership environment
What You Bring
  • Demonstrated experience as a developer with a track record of shipping real products or tools — not just contributing to them
  • Genuine business acumen — you understand how decisions, metrics, and strategy connect to what gets built and why
  • Hands-on experience with low-code/no-code platforms (Retool, Bubble, Airtable, Power Platform, or similar)
  • Practical experience building with and integrating AI tools and models into products or workflows
  • Strong problem-solving instincts and comfort operating with ambiguity and shifting priorities
  • Excellent communication skills — you can work directly with non-technical stakeholders and translate between business and technical language without losing either audience
  • A builder's mindset: bias toward action, comfort with fast iteration, and full ownership over outcomes
Nice to Have
  • Deep expertise with large-scale database design, optimization, and management
  • Experience contributing to or owning a product roadmap
  • Background in insurance, healthcare, or benefits administration — familiarity with enrollment, payroll, and billing data is a meaningful plus
  • Startup or high-growth environment experience
Success Milestones

90 Days

  • Fully ramped on First Gen's core tech stack, data infrastructure, and business workflows
  • At least one meaningful tool or automation shipped and in active use
  • Clear backlog of prioritized build opportunities identified and scoped

6 Months

  • Operating as a trusted builder within the product and ops ecosystem
  • Multiple solutions in production, reducing manual lift across at least two departments
  • Contributing meaningfully to roadmap conversations with leadership

12 Months

  • Recognized as a core driver of how First Gen builds and automates its business operations
  • At least one major platform or infrastructure initiative owned and delivered end-to-end
