Job description

Why the Business Development Representative Role at Kombo in New York, NY Could Be Your Next Big Move

Kombo (YC '22) has raised $30M+, grown from zero to $10M+ ARR, and is aiming to triple both team and revenue this year. As a Business Development Representative (BDR) at Kombo in New York, NY, you'll sit at the starting point of nearly every new deal — and a strong BDR can be directly responsible for up to 20% of new revenue in a given quarter.

What You'll Actually Do

Kombo builds a unified API for HR, payroll, LMS, and recruiting systems. Instead of forcing companies to build dozens of integrations themselves, the platform handles differences in data models, auth, and API behavior across 100+ systems in one go.

The BDR role is far from mindless cold-calling — it's strategic, thoughtful, and deeply collaborative. Only ~5% of your ideal customer profile is actively in-market at any given moment, and your mission is to figure out how to reach that slice effectively. You'll:

  • Work in pods alongside Account Executives, prioritizing and winning high-value accounts.
  • Go deep on the product, understand how customers buy, and form your own perspective on outreach.
  • Stay current on what's working in outbound, leaning on advisors and partners.
  • Help onboard new BDRs and share what's working on accounts, messaging, and outbound as the team grows.

Leadership expects ownership, not micro-management — you'll be trusted to hit targets and iterate quickly, with support from people across the company, including the founders.

What Kombo Is Looking For
  • Curiosity and humility: you ask real questions before pivoting your angle.
  • Clear communication: strong written and verbal skills for calls and emails.
  • Ownership mindset: structured, independent thinking to solve problems.
  • Bias toward action: you'd rather ship, learn, and iterate than wait for perfection.
  • Ambition: you want the fastest path to AE, thriving in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
  • In-person collaboration: you enjoy working alongside a team at the NYC office at 171 Madison Ave.
Compensation and Benefits

This is a full-time, on-site role. Kombo offers:

  • $80–100k OTE (base + variable) plus equity.
  • Generous ESOP.
  • Bi-annual team offsites and monthly events.
  • Direct access to senior mentors and advisors, including founders.
Interview Process
  • 25-minute intro call.
  • 45-minute deep-dive with Taylor, Kombo's Business Development Lead.
  • 1.5-hour case study.
  • Lunch with the team you'd be working with.
Practical Tips to Stand Out

Since this is a Sales and Business Development role in the Software Development space, preparation matters. Here's how you can get ahead:

  • Research the API integration landscape: understand what unified APIs solve for HR and payroll systems. Familiarize yourself with terms like data models, auth flows, and API behavior — not at an engineer level, but enough to speak confidently with technical buyers.
  • Study outbound frameworks: read up on modern B2B SaaS outbound strategies. Understand concepts like account-based selling, multi-channel sequencing, and personalized cold email craft.
  • Prepare for the case study: Kombo's 1.5-hour case is designed to see how you think. Practice breaking down a hypothetical ICP, identifying triggers, and mapping out a 30-60-90 day outreach plan for a target account.
  • Show your GTM thinking: come ready to discuss why timing, messaging, and account prioritization matter more than volume. Be ready to share examples of how you've researched or approached a buyer in the past.
  • Leverage the startup community: BDR roles at high-growth startups like Kombo are frequently discussed on platforms like LinkedIn, Bravado, and RepVue — use them to benchmark compensation and understand what top performers do differently.
Is This You?

If you want a role where your output directly shapes company revenue, where the most common next step is AE within roughly 12 months, and where you'll learn from a team of 60+ across NYC and Berlin — this could be the opportunity. Paths into management, operations, expansion, and support are also opening up as the company scales. If you're ready to own your pipeline and build a GTM career at a top-tier startup, this is your moment.
