Job description

The Business Development (BD) Manager is the in-market category & brand expert responsible for leading consumer & trade demand generation for our brands. This role promotes the growth of Diageo brands in collaboration with distributor / broker partners, customers, and consumers. It combines sales coordination, local marketing execution, and brand representation, working closely with Diageo sales teams and distributor teams. The role involves developing and executing market-specific brand, customer, and portfolio plans, with a focus on active market presence—spending at least 70% of time engaging with customers, distributor sales teams, marketing agencies, event promoters, and local influencers. Success relies on effective collaboration with internal teams to create and implement operational plans that drive demand and growth, measured through sales and market share improvements.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Identify and capitalize on key business and category opportunities to build demand, aligned with market-specific brand plans.
  • Develop strong, trusted relationships with key customers, engaging regularly to identify mutual growth opportunities.
  • Discover new market participation opportunities through close contact with distributor, agency, and customer personnel, validated by consumer and category insights.
  • Monitor brand performance metrics closely to ensure efforts meet market, brand, and customer expectations, making adjustments as needed.
  • Set category-specific targets, timelines, and KPIs for sales and activation efforts with partners.
  • Seek potential business opportunities through cross-promotions, sponsorships, media, and influencer engagements.
  • Contribute to the development of local category and channel plans with brand and trade marketing teams.
  • Lead local category and brand education initiatives, coordinating with Diageo and third-party personnel, including the Diageo Academy.

About You

Preferred Experience, Skills, and Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration or related field.
  • 3-5 years of sales and brand activation experience.
  • WSET Level 1 or equivalent in Wines & Spirits, or willingness to complete quickly.
  • Ongoing category-specific learning—formal and informal—covering liquids, consumer insights, and category trends.
  • Experience in the beverage alcohol industry, familiar with On, Off, and Non-Premise channels.

Landscape

  • Proven in-market and customer engagement, with enthusiasm for active trade interactions and turning insights into actions.
  • Deep understanding of Diageo and competitor brands.
  • Strong negotiation skills, including sponsorship agreements.
  • Excellent relationship-building based on transparency, empathy, and trust.
  • Ability to analyze sales and demand metrics to identify intervention points.
  • Customer and consumer-centric mindset, understanding motivations and effective appeal strategies.
  • Knowledge of the BevAlc route to market and compliance influence.
