Responsibilities

  • Own a commodity portfolio P&L, tracking margin, volume growth, and exposure.
  • Execute buy/sell contracts; negotiate supplier and customer agreements to optimize price, timing, and risk.
  • Manage long/short positions to align purchases with sales commitments.
  • Balance contracts/positions weekly to reconcile exposure and take corrective action.
  • Manage risk from market volatility and over/under-contracting.
  • Improve margins via strategic sourcing, pricing discipline, and timing.
  • Identify opportunities for profitable volume growth with key customers.
  • Provide market intelligence and pricing guidance.
  • Maintain supplier relationships for competitive supply and insights.
  • Lead contract lifecycle management: booking, monitoring, adjustments, resolving discrepancies.
  • Deliver regular P&L, contract balance, market positions, and growth reports.
  • Support continuous improvement to boost trading efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with policies and health and safety.

Job description

Reporting to the Business Development Director - Commodities, the Business Development Manager owns the end-to-end commodity portfolio, including buy and sell contracting, position management, margin delivery, and volume growth across Canada and the U.S. The role operates with a trading mindset, managing market exposure, contract positions, and timing decisions while ensuring weekly portfolio balance alignment.

Scope

The Business Development Manager Commodities is responsible for managing a commodity trading book, balancing supplier contracts and customer sales commitments while optimizing profitability. The individual collaborates with Sales, Procurement, and Suppliers to execute trading strategies, manage risk, and deliver growth.

MAJOR TASKS AND DUTIES
  • Own a defined commodity portfolio P&L, including margin performance, volume growth, and exposure management.
  • Execute buy and sell contracting strategies, negotiating supplier and customer agreements to optimize pricing, timing, and risk.
  • Actively manage long and short positions, ensuring alignment between purchased volumes and sales commitments.
  • Perform weekly contract and position balancing to reconcile buy vs. sell exposure and take corrective action as required.
  • Manage and mitigate risk related to market volatility, over/under-contracting, and inventory exposure.
  • Drive margin improvement through strategic sourcing, pricing discipline, and market timing.
  • Identify and execute opportunities for profitable volume growth with key customers.
  • Provide market intelligence and pricing guidance to internal stakeholders and customers.
  • Maintain strong supplier relationships to secure competitive supply and market insight.
  • Lead contract lifecycle management including booking, monitoring, adjustments, and resolution of discrepancies.
  • Deliver regular reporting on P&L performance, contract balance, market positions, and growth metrics.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance trading efficiency and process effectiveness.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and health and safety requirements.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
  • Post-secondary education in Business, Supply Chain, Finance, or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in commodity trading, procurement, or commercial roles with portfolio ownership.
  • Strong understanding of commodity markets, pricing dynamics, and supply-demand fundamentals.
  • Proven ability to manage margin, volume, and risk concurrently.
  • Strong analytical and financial acumen with advanced Excel and ERP/CRM skills.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • High sense of accountability, urgency, and decision-making capability in fast-moving environments.
