Job description

Job Title: Business Development Manager Department: Sales Translation Reports To: Vice President, LanguageLine Translation Solutions Classification: Exempt Management Level: Individual Contributor Levelling B1

Key Essential Functions The Business Development Manager is responsible for building long-term, mutually beneficial relationships with prospective and current clients. This role is expected to exercise initiative, discretion and independent judgement in the administration and management of each client relationship and will serve as the primary point of contact for the client. The Business Development Manager ("BDM") position is critical to the overall success of the company. The BDM is expected to develop new client leads in addition to those provided by the company. Once a lead has been identified, it will be up to the BDM to devise and execute a strategy for securing an agreement to provide translation, localization and other related solutions. The BDM will operate under limited supervision and will have considerable latitude in dealings with both current and prospective clients, including decisions as to who to call, when to call, and what to say. Prepared scripts are not utilized. The BDM is required to grasp the realities of the marketplace, negotiate with client representatives, and structure deals that result in revenues and profits for LanguageLine Solutions.

New Business Development and Revenue Growth Proactively identify, prospect, qualify, and close net-new business within an assigned U.S. territory or market segment, with primary emphasis on self-generated opportunities. Own the full sales cycle from target-account research and outreach through discovery, solution development, proposal, negotiation, contract execution, and handoff to delivery. Build and maintain a qualified pipeline through outbound prospecting, referrals, networking, industry events, and coordinated marketing activity. Achieve assigned bookings, revenue, pipeline, and activity targets; maintain territory, account, and opportunity plans that support quota attainment. Identify client business needs and position LanguageLine's translation, localization, and related language solutions using a consultative, value-based approach. Maintain knowledge of the market, competitors, and emerging language and AI-enabled solutions to strengthen prospecting and client conversations.

Solution Development and Commercial Execution Lead discovery with business, procurement, operational, and technical stakeholders; gather requirements and coordinate internal subject-matter experts as needed. Partner with Project Management, Operations, Finance, Legal, and other teams to develop accurate estimates, solution designs, proposals, RFP, RFQ, and RFI responses, statements of work, and commercial terms. Obtain required internal approvals before submitting pricing, proposals, or contractual commitments to clients. Deliver presentations and proposals, address objections, negotiate within approved parameters, and move opportunities to close. Maintain complete and timely client, activity, opportunity, pipeline, next-step, and forecast data in Salesforce or other approved systems. Coordinate a clear post-sale transition to the Project Management team, including scope, commitments, risks, and client expectations. Follow sales, contracting, pricing, quality, confidentiality, and information-security policies throughout the sales process.

Client and Market Partnership Develop credible relationships with prospective clients and key decision-makers, serving as the primary commercial contact during the sales cycle. Maintain appropriate contact with newly won clients during implementation and partner with delivery teams to resolve commercial or expectation-setting issues. Represent LanguageLine Solutions at client meetings, conferences, trade shows, and industry events; travel within the United States as business needs require. Share client feedback, competitive intelligence, and market trends with Sales, Marketing, Product, Operations, and leadership to improve positioning and solutions. Support cross-functional process and quality improvement initiatives related to the customer journey and sales-to-delivery handoff. Maintain current knowledge of translation, localization, language technology, and relevant AI services through ongoing professional development. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications Required Qualifications Experience: Bachelor's degree in business, marketing, communications, international business, or a related field is preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Three or more years of quota-carrying business-to-business sales or business development experience selling professional services, technology, AI services, or other complex solutions. Demonstrated hunter track record of creating pipeline and closing net-new business while meeting or exceeding assigned sales goals. Experience managing the full sales cycle, including outbound prospecting, discovery, proposals or RFP responses, pricing, negotiation, contracting, and handoff. Translation or localization industry experience is preferred; relevant software, AI services, language technology, or technology-enabled services experience is also valued. Experience working independently across remote, cross-functional teams and managing multiple complex opportunities at different sales stages.

  • Consultative and solution-selling skills, including discovery, business-case development, value positioning, objection handling, and closing.
  • Strong outbound prospecting, lead qualification, account research, territory planning, and pipeline-development skills.
  • Commercial and financial acumen, including pricing, margin awareness, deal structuring, and contract negotiation within approved authority.
  • Proficiency with CRM, pipeline, and forecasting practices; experience with Salesforce is preferred.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, presentation, and persuasion skills with senior business, procurement, operational, and technical stakeholders.
  • Strong organization, follow-through, and prioritization across multiple opportunities, deadlines, and internal contributors.
  • Ability to build credible relationships while maintaining confidentiality, sound judgment, and professional conduct.
