What You’ll Be Doing

The Business Development Director (BDD) is a senior individual contributor role focused on prospecting and closing new business within large enterprise clients. Responsibilities include securing contractual commitments from Economic Buying Influences (EBIs) and Technical Buying Influences (TBIs) across all product categories. BDDs map prospecting strategies for each potential customer and engage appropriate selling partners such as category experts to close accounts. They possess detailed knowledge of products and services to ensure offerings meet prospects' needs and challenges. Collaboration with support and internal teams such as category experts, implementation/support, and pricing is essential.

This role is remote but regionally focused on supporting customers in TX, OK, NM, AR & LA. The individual should reside within or near this region.

  • Secure new business by creating enterprise sales and revenue strategies to win high-value prospects.
  • Experience in selling deals of $500K or more.
  • Ability to negotiate with C-Level decision makers in State/Local Government and Educational Institutions.
  • Navigate complex sales cycles involving multiple influencers and decision makers.
  • Design and negotiate intricate contracts.
  • Collaborate with Line of Business (LOB) experts on deal strategies to close programmatic deals.
  • High financial acumen to handle complex negotiations.
  • Develop senior relationships across diverse personas, influencers, and partners.
  • Maintain transparency in pipeline management, pricing negotiations, and contract governance via CRM.
  • Demonstrate expertise in prospect industry buying processes and support product selection and standardization.

  • Proven experience in managing programs or business development.
  • Ability to engage at senior leadership levels.
  • Effective presentation skills, both virtually and face-to-face.
  • Consultative, solutions, insight selling, negotiation, and client management skills.
  • Ability to set targets, develop growth plans, and collaborate with sales teams.
  • Strong business, financial, operational, and technological understanding.
  • Analytical skills to interpret industry trends and tailor solutions based on Staples' value proposition.
  • Independence and minimal supervision capability.
  • Excellent organization, time management, and negotiation skills.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience.
  • 8+ years managing large or complex customer acquisition.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with SLED/Public Sector clients.
  • Knowledge of Staples products: Office, Furniture, Facility Solutions, Technology, Print.
  • Success working with C-level/executive leadership in government and education sectors.
  • Skills in business analytics and financial decision-making.
  • Proficiency in PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.
