Qualifications

Job Description - Bus & Truck Mechanic (2500004U)

Position: Bus & Truck Mechanic

Salary: $50,680

Position Summary

Repairs and maintains Authority-owned vehicles including light, medium, and heavy-duty buses and trucks, automobiles, mobile operating equipment, and associated components such as diesel engines, automatic transmissions, air brake systems, and suspension steering.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Inspects, repairs, and maintains mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic units and components.
  • Disassembles, adjusts, overhauls, reassembles, and replaces units and parts.
  • Cleans units and parts using various solvents and solutions.
  • Uses hand and power tools to perform repairs and tests equipment and gauges.
  • Analyzes inspection findings to identify malfunctions.
  • Assists in training apprentices and other staff.
  • Operates Authority vehicles within the shop area.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Successful completion of the Bus & Truck Mechanic Apprentice program, or equivalent experience, or a minimum of five years in heavy-duty diesel truck or bus repair, or related automotive education.
  • Full-time member of Auto Mechanics – Local 701.
  • Pass drug and alcohol tests mandated by the Federal Transportation Administration.
  • Valid Illinois CDL with “P” endorsement and “B” classification.
  • Tool supply required.
  • Pass a physical exam.
Physical Requirements
  • Standing, walking, sitting, lifting (up to 50 lbs.), climbing, stooping, reaching, feeling, talking, hearing, and visual acuity required for job duties.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of heavy-duty diesel engines, transmissions, airbrakes, steering, and drivelines.
  • Ability to read wiring diagrams and understand electrical circuitry.
  • Familiarity with electronic testing tools and environmental safety standards.
Working Conditions
  • Work outdoors in extreme cold or heat, wet and humid conditions, and in proximity to moving engines and tools.
  • Operate from ladders, work with hazardous materials, and obtain forklift certification.
